1960 Chrysler New Yorker

The 1955 Chryslers received all-new and modern styling by Virgil Exner, replacing the prior high roofline designs of K.T. Keller. The hemispherical V8 engine produced 250 horsepower and would continue to increase in output over the years. The engine was backed by a PowerFlite automatic transmission that was controlled by a lever on the instrument panel. The styling of the 1956 models was known as the 'PowerStyle' and featured a new mesh grille, leather seats, and a 354 cubic-inch Hemi V8 engine rated at 280 horsepower. Exner redesigned the Chrysler cars for 1957 with the 'Forward Look' at a cost of $300 million, highlighted by tail fins that swept up from just behind the front doors. The 392 CID V8 produced 325 horsepower, the transmission was a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic, and the Torsion bar suspension system - called Torsion-Aire - improved the car's ride quality and handling. New body-side trim and shrunken taillights were added in 1958, and horsepower rose to 345 hp.

For 1959, the New Yorker gained a new 413 cubic-inch 'Golden Lion' V8 engine with 350 horsepower that was lighter and less expensive than the previous Hemi engine which would never return to the New Yorker. The front-end styling and tailfins were new but replaced a year later with tailfins that terminated in attractive taillight lenses. There was almost complete restraint in side-mounted chrome trim, giving them a refined appearance that vastly enhanced Chrysler's image. The grille was wider at the bottom and shorter at the top and reversed a year later when the slanted headlights were introduced. The headlights of the 1960 New Yorker were similar to the previous year's design of dual round units positioned side-by-side. Chrome trim began at the wrap-around front bumper, ahead of the front wheel, and continued to the rear-wraparound bumper. The front bumper dipped in the center, following the contours of the grille opening, and it continued to wear rear fender trim bars for the fifth consecutive year, with the number of bars now nine.

The 413 cubic-inch V8 engine had a cast-iron block, hydraulic valve lifters, five main bearings, a Carter four-barrel carburetor, and delivered 350 horsepower at 4,600 RPM. The engine used a push-button-operated TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. The 1960 Chryslers were built using unibody construction utilizing front and rear subframes while retaining front torsion bars and Hotchkis rear suspension with outboard-mounted leaf springs.

The sedan had a base price of $4,400, the hardtop coupe at $4,460, the hardtop sedan at $4,520, and the convertible at $4,875. The six-passenger station wagon had a factory base price of $5,020 and the nine-passenger version at $5,130. The sedan was the most popular with 9,079 examples built, followed by 5,625 of the hardtop sedan, 2,835 of the hardtop, and 556 of the convertible. 671 examples were nine-passenger wagons and 624 were the six-passenger version. The combined 19,390 examples of the New Yorker represented approximately twenty-five percent of the company's overall production.
