2009 Volvo XC 70 news, pictures, and information

All new for 2008, Volvo's versatile XC70 segment-defining crossover gains a new T6 performance flagship model for 2009. Boosting the fun factor is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that delivers 281 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Maximum torque is on tap from just 1,500 rpm and remains available all the way up the rev range, resulting in quick acceleration and smooth drivability. Compared to the normally aspirated XC70 3.2, the T6 generates 46 more horsepower and 59 more lb.-ft. of torque.

A somewhat smaller cylinder displacement of the T6, owing to slightly narrower cylinder bore and shorter stroke is compensated by a single turbocharger with twin-scroll technology. This takes in exhaust gases in two stages with inflow divided into lots of three cylinders each. Thus the T6 permits the use of a more compact and simplified turbo that provides extremely swift response with the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Features that visually distinguish the new T6 include standard 17-inch 'Sargas' alloy wheels, visible dual tailpipes and a T6 badge on the tailgate. The cabin gains a performance-inspired watch dial instrument cluster plus sporty cross-brushed aluminum inlays. Available for the first time on the new generation XC70 are 18-inch 'Minos' alloy wheels offered as an option on the T6.

Both XC70 models are fitted with a six-speed 'Geartronic' automatic transmission that enables the driver to shift manually when desired. Standard All-Wheel Drive with Instant TractionTM ensures the best possible road grip in all situations. Electronic Hill Descent Control (HDC) uses the vehicle's brakes and engine torque to crawl in bottom gear on steep downhill slopes.

Building on a heritage of innovation and safety, Volvo introduced a Collision Avoidance Package for the XC70 in midyear 2008. Volvo's latest preventative safety technologies focus on preventing driver distractions that studies show cause up to 90 percent of all traffic accidents. Based on this statistic, Volvo developed efficient technologies to help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of accidents caused by distraction and driver fatigue. The package includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Collision Warning with Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Introduced on the new XC70, a height-adjustable integrated booster cushion is available that teams with an extended inflatable curtain. This combination provides the industry's best passenger safety system for precious cargo (your children) in the rear seat. A strong side structure uses high-tensile steel of different grades to optimize side-impact protection.

Bluetooth hands-free phone interface is standard on the XC70 for 2009. The extensive list of standard amenities can be augmented with a world-class sound system. The new Technology Package includes Premium Sound Dynaudio® with a 650-watt amplifier, Dolby Pro-Logic II Surround Sound and 12 Dynaudio® speakers, rear seat headphone jacks and SiriusTM Satellite Radio. The Volvo Navigation System with HDD, DVD map data and remote control along with a dual screen rear seat entertainment system is also available separately.

Cargo carrying flexibility is the XC70's forte. The luggage compartment floor is equipped with aluminum rails and movable storage points to secure the load. Side panels also have built-in load anchorage eyelets to keep luggage securely in place. In addition, they can be supplemented with multifunctional rails for a variety of hooks, load-anchoring nets, cargo space dividers and other load related accessories. For the ultimate in convenience for loading and unloading cargo, the XC70 offers a power tailgate as part of the Convenience Package.
