A Spider Version of the 6-wheeled supercar Covini C6W was unveiled to the public at the 2008 Bologna Motor Show. This mid-engined supercar is backed by a V8 engine capable of producing over 400 horsepower. There is a six-speed manual gearbox and Brembo disc brakes. The most unusual and intriguing aspect of the car is at the front end - its six-wheels. Along wîth an open cockpit, the Spyder version introduced a slightly larger tires, new engine cover, and improvements to the engine. If you would like one, you will have to move fast, as just six examples will be created per year.
So, Why six wheels?
-In case of a front tyre deflation, the vehicle control is guaranteed by the other wheel next to it.
-Four front disc brakes, although a smaller single area, ensure a greater braking surface; this means less overheating and a higher brake effort
-Low risk of aquaplaning, due to the two foremost wheels, which wipe the water for the ones behind them, ensuring a better roadholding
-Comfort is a consequence of more evenly distributed reaction forces in the supension: the reaction in case of a pot hole is divided between the four front wheels and the shudder in the chassis is limited.
-Reduced unsprung weight in the wheels improves the grip. Directional stability is improved: a change of angle due to slack in the §teering mechanism (in stuctures like silentblocks) is compensated by the second set of wheels.
-Two additional springs and dampers provide a better handling for the vehicle.
About Covini
After constructing a few prototypes as a hobby, in 1978 Ferruccio Covini founded the Covini Engineering, a small company dedicated to the construction of static and automotive prototypes. Built from the passion for cars and engines, the artisan company has been active mainly wîth experimentation and innovation rather than big volume production. The main prototypes so far built are the T44 Soleado (1978), a sportscar wîth 4 wheel drive and and innovative bodyshell made wîth interchangeable panels, the T40 Summit (1986), a luxurious and elegant 2+2 coupe propelled by a 4 litre engine wîth an experimental Overboost system, the B24 Sirio (1982), a sports 2 seater saloon, the first production diesel engined car reaching 200 Km/h (125 mph); C36 Turbotronic (1998): a Supercoupé able to shatter the 300 Km/h barrier (188 mph). These prototypes have the peculiarity of being all propelled by the powerful diesel engines from VM Motori (from Cento, Ferrara).
Actually the company is developing the new COVINI C6W, a three axles super gt, that looks to active and passive safety without give up the performances.
Covini Engineering has alsso taken part in other important projects like the design and manufacture of the Dragon Fly ultralight 2 seater helicopter, and the supercar Chevrolet Callaway C7.Source - Covini
