1974 Chevrolet Nova

The Chevrolet Nova received very few changes for 1974 as the company's sales brochure proclaimed that 'we've been building essentially the same car since 1968. We think we've got it down pat.' The car was available with either a six-cylinder or V8 engine. The six- gained popularity as the automotive market continued to experience fuel shortages and growing safety mandates. With fuel rationing and long lines for fuel, the fuel-sipping compacts gained a greater appeal with consumers. In total, Chevrolet produced 390,537 examples of their Nova with 171,430 being fitted with a six-cylinder engine.

The Nova was available as a sedan, coupe, or 2-door hatchback. Hatchback body styles could be given two-tone finishes. Changes for 1974 included a new bow-tie grille emblem, new hubcaps, and larger parking lights. The bumpers - like most production vehicles - grew in size in an effort to offer more safety to the car and its occupants. 11 new colors were available.

Chevrolet offered a limited-edition 'Spirit of America' series which was painted white and had red and blue accent stripes. Coupes or hatchbacks fitted with the Super Sport option were given the black-out grille treatment with horizontal moldings badging the rectangular parking lamps.

Chevrolet no longer offered the two-speed Powerglide automatic on the Nova line. Standard equipment included full-foam front seats, foam rear seats, color-keyed rubber floor coverings, flow-through ventilation system, dual-speed electric wipers, outside rearview mirror on the left side of the vehicle, cargo-guar luggage compartment (except on the hatchback), and a 250 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine.

Nova Custom models added bright parking lights and liftgate accents, deluxe bumpers with black vinyl impact stripes, carpets, day/night mirror, glove box light, right front door light switch, trunk mat, and cigarette lighter.
