1956 Mercedes-Benz 220 Series news, pictures, and information

Convertible Coupe
Chassis Num: A1800306500036

The Mercedes-Benz 220S Sedan was unveiled to the world at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The 220S - or Super - was intended for the enthusiastic audience who sought quality and craftsmanship. The Sedan version was the first of the series to be introduced, with a convertible option appearing shortly thereafter, followed by a hard top in 1957. In total, there were fewer than 3,500 coupes and convertibles constructed.

Under the bonnet of the 220 Series Mercedes-Benz was an inline six-cylinder engine that was the same size as the 219, but with additional horsepower. Over the years, Mercedes would continue to fine-tune and enhance the 2,195cc engine.

This particular 1957 Mercedes-Benz 220S cabriolet has a tan convertible top, tan leather upholstery, and a burgundy exterior. Inside there is a clock and an original AM/FM radio.

In 2008, this vehicle was offered for sale at the 'Sports & Classics of Monterey' presented by RM Auctions. It had an estimated value of $50,000 - $75,000. The lot was sold for a high bid of $66,000, including buyer's premium.

Convertible Coupe
Chassis Num: 180.030-65-11757

A new model - the 220 Cabriolet - was presented at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 1955. This elegantly shaped new model was based mainly on a shortened chassis from the 220 sedan which was already in production for one and a half years. Deliveries of the aesthetically designed model were planned to start during the second quarter of 1956. However, this never happened, at least not according to plan - an open version of the 220 was never produced. The convertible manufactured from July 1956, was based instead on the upscale 220 S, the successor to the 220. As a result the new cabriolet benefited from the new, powerful 100 horsepower engine, carried over from the 220 S sedan.

Production lasted from 1956 through 1969 with 2,178 units produced. The inline six-cylinder (M 180 II) engine displaced 2195cc, offered 100 horsepower, and carried the car to a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph).

This fully restored example is a numbers matching car with just one owner from new. It has been restored to original specification by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center.
Mercedes-Benz has a long and proud tradition and reputation that was built by years of domination on the raceway, superior build quality, and undeniable beauty. The cars they constructed are legendary and well renowned. Their tradition continued with the 220S and 300 model range. The 220S was offered in saloon, coupe, and convertible configuration. They featured leather seating and exotic materials used throughout. The wood trim was commonly mahogany. Under the bonnet was a 2195 cc alloy straight six-cylinder engine with single overhead camshaft, twin Solex downdraft carburetors and a 7.6:1 compression ratio. The 125 SAE horsepower was sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed column shift automatic gearbox. Braking power was provided by a servo-assisted drums.

The 220S was produced in limited numbers beginning in the mid-1950's and continuing until October of 1959. A total of 3,429 examples were produced with 2178 being convertibles.
