1913 Herreshoff Model 30 news, pictures, and information

Runabout
Chassis Num: 13752

Sold for $40,700 at 2009 RM Auctions.
The Herreshoff automobiles were the work of Charles Frederick Herreshoff who had designed the engine for the 1908 Thomas-Detroit. The Herreshoff car was introduced in 1909 and would remain in production until 1914. Charles Herreshoff had left the company in March of 1914 and production soon halted. Charles was later involved with the Harvard car built in Troy, Michigan.

Charles Herreshoff's family was legendary in yachting circles. He was the nephew of the famous naval architects J.B. and Nathaniel Herreshoff.

The early Herreshoff automobiles were powered by a four-cylinder engine designed by Charles for marine use. The engines would increase in power over the years. By 1911, the company offered two models, including one with a limousine body, and a six-cylinder car with Lycoming engine was added in 1913.

This particular car wears an older restoration that has held up rather well over the years. There is some pits, chips and cracking in the paint and there is a ding in the left front fender. There is an older canvas top that has some staining and the interior is red leather which shows no cracks but the hides are beginning to harden. There are electric side and tail lamps, and gas headlamps. There is a brass windshield frame that is slightly tarnished, and nickel plate on the headlamps showing some signs of rust. The car rides on Firestone 32 x 4 Non-Skid tires and the left running board carries a spare of diamond tread pattern.

The L-head four-cylinder engine displaces 161 cubic-inches and produces 30 horsepower. There is a four-speed manual transmission and a wheelbase that measures just 110 inches.

In 2009, this Model 30 Runabout was offered for sale at the Automobiles of Arizona auction presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $25,000 - $35,000. The lot was sold for a high bid of $40,700 including buyer's premium.
