Lola's T332 had won nine races in 1974, including finishing 20 out of 27 times in the Top 3. In the United States, it had finished 18 out of 21 times in the Top 3. The T400 had a very tough act to follow.

The T400 was given revised aerodynamics and a rising rate independent suspension, and after continued improvement, would find success on multiple continents. The 5-liter V8 engine was mated to a Hewland DG 300, five-speed gearbox which sent the power to the 13x17 rear wheels. The T-400 had two fuel cells with a total capacity of 30 gallons. The chassis is a 3/4 monocoque constructed of L72 and NS4 aluminum alloy. Steel tubes were used for hte rear sub-frame, with the engine acting as a semi-stressed member. The chassis was clothed in glass reinforced plastic and came in three sections.

Warwick Brown captured the Australian Formula 5000 series championship and Teddy Pilette won the European Championship. Al Unser driving for the Vels/Parnelli Jones racing team had a successful racing season in the United States.

In total, there were 14 examples of the T400 constructed.
