1959 Plymouth Sport Fury

The Plymouth Fury was a sub-series of the Belvedere from 1956 through 1958, uniquely styled in sandstone white with gold anodized aluminum trim from 1956 through 1597, and in buckskin beige with gold anodized aluminum trim in 1958. The two-door hardtop had bumper wing-guards, special interiors, and a twin four-barrel carbureted V8 engine. The 318 cubic-inch V8 powering the 1957 and 1958 Fury developed nearly 300 horsepower. In 1958, an optional 350 cubic-inch V8, called the 'Golden Commando' produced 305 horsepower with the help of two four-barrel carburetors. A fuel-injected option brought horsepower to 315 bhp, but the Bendix electronic fuel-injection system was later recalled by the factory and replaced by a conventional dual four-barrel setup.

The Sport Fury became the top model in 1959, resting above the Fury and replacing the Belvedere as the top model within the Plymouth lineup. Fury body styles included a two- and four-door hardtop, and a four-door sedan. The station wagon version was called the Sport Suburban and the Sporty Fury was offered as a convertible and a two-door hardtop.

The Fury, Savoy, Belvedere, and Station Wagon came equipped with a polyspherical 317.6 cubic-inch A-Series V8 with overhead valves (OHV), solid valve lifters, five main bearings, a Carter two-barrel carburetor, and developed 230 horsepower at 4,400 RPM. The Sporty Fury came standard with a four-barrel carbureted version of the 317.6 CID V8 with 260 horsepower. The 350 CID V8 was replaced with a 361 CID V8 'Golden Commando' with a two- or four-barrel carburetor. The 318 CID V8 with the dual four-barrel setup was no longer offered.

A three-speed manual transmission was standard, with overdrive and a three-speed pushbutton TorqueFlite automatic optional. A Powerlite automatic was optional with all engines but the Golden Commando V-8.

The convertible body style had a factory base price of $3,125 and the hardtop coupe listed for $2,930 (in 1958 the Sporty Fury hardtop coupe listed for $3,030). 5,303 examples of the Sporty Fury hardtop were produced in 1958 and 17,867 in 1959, along with 5,990 of the convertible.

The frontal styling was updated with hooded headlamps and a modern egg-crate-style grille. In the back, the tailfins became even longer and higher than in previous years. The interior had bucket-seats that swiveled when the doors opened. Despite the large size of the Sport Fury, with delivered excellent road-holding characteristics due in part to its carefully engineered suspension. Chrysler engineers had only recently debuted the Torsion-Aire independent torsion bar front suspension, coupled with longitudinal rear leaf springs and a semi-floating rear axle design.

Fury signature script could be found inside the dual moldings at the rear, with colorful 'Forward Look' medallions positioned directly behind the moldings.

Standard equipment included an electric clock, cigar lighter, Deluxe padded steering wheel with horn ring, foam seat cushions, armrests, dual sun visors, and single-speed electric windshield wipers. There were dual headlights in the front, oval-shaped horizontal taillights, bumper jack and wheel lug wrench, rear quarter stone shields, disc wheel covers, an oil filter, a single molding that traversed the body side and wrapped across the rear deck lid, and Sport deck lid tire cover stamping.

Plymouth's final design statement of the 1950s had blossomed into fitted fins and chrome-laden accents on the 1959 Sport Fury, successfully combining style, power, and luxury into an affordable package that was attainable by a large segment of buyers. The aerodynamic styling mimicked the design cues of the emerging jet-age era, complimented by flashy names like Savoy, Belvedere, and the Fury.
