1993 GMC Typhoon

GMC produced a high-performance SUV in 1992 and 1993 named the Typhoon. It was based on the GMC Syclone, the fastest production (stock) truck for 1991. This high-performance version of the Sonoma pickup truck was built (along with the Typhoon and Sonoma GT) by GMC and PAS (Production Automotive Services) of Troy, Michigan, and sold through dealerships.

Engine
Both the GMC Syclone and Typhoon were powered by a 4.3-liter (LB4) turbocharged V6 engine with modified intake and exhaust manifolds, head gaskets, pistons, main caps, and fuel system. The standard Vortec engine powering the Jimmy produced 190 horsepower; the modified unit powering the Syclone and Typhoon produced 280 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. The Mitsubishi TD06-17C/8 cm2 turbocharger produced 14 psi of boost. The engine was paired with a 4L60 four-speed automatic transmission and a Borg-Warner 4472 transfer case (the Syclone used a BorgWarner 1372). Most of the power (65%) was sent to the front and 35% to the rear.

Mechanical Specification
The GMC Typhoon rested on a 100.5-inch wheelbase and had an overall length of 170.3 inches, a height of 60 inches, and a width of 68.2 inches. It had a limited-slip rear differential and upgraded brakes and suspension. Unlike the Syclone, the Typhoon featured an air-operated self-leveling rear suspension.

Performance
The GMC Typhoon was capable of sprinting from zero to sixty mph in 5.3 seconds and had a limited top speed of 125 mph. It could run the quarter mile in 14.1 seconds.

Production and Pricing
A total of 4,697 Typhoons were built, plus approximately six pre-production prototypes. Production was split fairly even between 1992 and 1993, with 2,497 of the former and 2,200 of the latter.

The GMC Typhoon was priced at approximately $29,970.
