2013 Volkswagen Jetta
Herndon, VA, - Following record sales in 2011—the sixth-generation Jetta's first full year on sale in the Ú.S.—the best-selling model in Volkswagen's line-up receives a number of technology and interior comfort updates for the 2013 model year. Suffice to say, the only German engineered compact sedan just got better.

New features and packages for 2013
Starting with the popular 2.5-liter engine models, standard updates to the SE trim include chrome-trimmed interior switches, new decorative metallic trim on the dash and door panels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. Additional interior enhancements for front-seat occupants include an adjustable center armrest and power-recline on both seats. Exterior enhancements include a chrome radiator grille and chrome window trim.

2013 Volkswagen JettaThe SEL trim adds a six-way power driver seat with manual lumbar support, sport-comfort driver and front passenger seats, and a soft-touch dash. A two-tone black-and-beige interior complements the changes for 2013.

A new trim, SEL with Navigation, adds the acclaimed Fender® Premium Audio System and the RNS-315 touchscreen navigation system to the very well-equipped SEL.

Yet even the entry-level Jetta models come extremely well-equipped. The 2.0L Jetta S, with a starting MSRP of $16,675, has standard air conditioning, one-touch auto up/down power windows, power locks with keyless entry, and power heated exterior mirrors, along with a host of safety features such as Electronic Stability Control, six airbags, four-wheel disc brakes, and Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System.

Jetta TDI
Similar to the 2.5-liter gasoline trims, all TDI Clean Diesel models receive interior and exterior enhancements. All models now include power-recline driver and front passenger seats in addition to a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. A new iridium trim enhances the dash and door panels. The exterior now features a chrome radiator grille along with chrome window trim. Later in the model year, all TDI models will receive a soft-touch dash.

The top-of-the-line TDI Premium with Navigation trim includes a six-way power driver seat and a new 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheel that differentiates it from the 16-inch standard wheel of other TDI models.

Jetta GLI
The performance-driven Jetta GLI model now features Launch Control. All Jetta GLI models equipped with the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission include a Launch Control program that can be engaged by the driver when the vehicle is at a stop, allowing for a perfect launch with controlled wheelspin. Technology updates to the sporty GLI Autobahn with Navigation trim include a rearview camera and Bi-Xenon headlights with LED DRLs.

Jetta Hybrid
Volkswagen's first hybrid compact, the Jetta Hybrid, launches in the late fall. It will offer a manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy rating of 45 mpg. Further detail on trims and pricing will be announced at the launch.

2013 Volkswagen Jetta
Exterior
Marketing experts call it 'class-up appeal'. It's the offering of more, for less. Which is why, when Volkswagen completely redesigned the Jetta for the 2011 model year, it crafted a bigger car, with a longer wheelbase and 2.9 inches added to the overall length.

The increased dimensions allowed designers to incorporate clear, precise lines and muscular surfaces to impart a timeless elegance, giving the impression that this is a car from a higher class.

At the front, the coupe-like incline of the windscreen and the consistent use of horizontal lines define the Jetta's design. The horizontal blades in the grille, together with the blades in the lower intake, are designed to make the Jetta appear wider and more dynamic.

To break-up the tall body sides of the new Jetta, Volkswagen brand head of design Klaus Bischoff and his team created a pronounced character line—a 'tornado' line. This cuts through the large side surfaces, running as a sharp crease from the rearmost edge of the headlight, beneath the windows, softening-out as it reaches the rear lights.

To give visual weight to the lower part of the Jetta and impart a sense of the car being 'planted' to the road, the base of the doors is eased outwards. The pronounced wheelarches also add visual width and weight to the car.

The GLI features a more dynamic look than the regular Jetta, courtesy of its honeycomb grille, a deeper front spoiler, and GTI-style vertical foglights and red-painted brake calipers. At the rear, there are smoked taillights and dual exhaust tips. Adding to the sporting exterior styling for 2013 are available LED daytime running lights paired with Bi-Xenon headlights.

The Jetta GLI offers striking 10-spoke 17-inch alloys as the standard wheel, with a wide-spoke 18-inch design for the GLI Autobahn model. A stunning 18-inch Motorsport Black rim is available as an option on all GLI models.

Interior
A key benefit of the Jetta's extended wheelbase—it stretches an incredible 104.4 inches—is a truly spacious interior, with impressive rear-seat legroom of 38.1 inches. Long legs can rejoice. The gently arcing roofline also means more than ample headroom of 37.1 inches for rear-seat passengers.

And stretch-out legroom in the back isn't achieved by a cramped front seat either. Being tailored primarily for an American audience—the Ú.S. is the Jetta's biggest market globally—there is no shortage of legroom and headroom up front.

Just open any of the Jetta's wide-angled doors and the quality of materials, the fit and finish, and the clean, simple, refined elegance of the cabin is clearly visible. And in true German tradition, the layout of the fascia, the positioning of the switches and controls, and the clarity of the oversized, round instruments is designed to be ergonomic and intuitive.

Trunk space also borders on the cavernous. The Jetta offers a class-leading 15.5 cubic feet of usable load space, and can be increased significantly by folding forward the 60/40-split rear seatback. The rear seatback is also offered with a pass-through to accommodate longer items, like skis.

On the Jetta GLI, the interior stays true to its performance roots. Side-bolstered sport bucket seats feature bright-red stitching; there's matching red stitching on the flat-bottom steering wheel; and aluminum pedals, shift knob, dash and door trim. For the first time, a rearview camera will also be available.

Fender® Premium Audio
After more than a year of critical acclaim, the iconic partnership between Volkswagen and Fender continues. The remarkable Fender Premium Audio System will be available throughout the 2013 Jetta lineup.

Developed through collaboration between Fender and Panasonic, the system cranks out 400 watts of power played through nine speakers, including a trunk-mounted subwoofer, to bring the raw emotion of a live music performance to the driving experience.

And the same cool, chromed Fender logo that has graced the guitar 'amps' of some of the world's greatest rock legends is featured on the A-pillar tweeters on the Jetta's Fender sound system.

Fender Premium Audio comes standard with the 2012 Jetta SEL w/ Navigation, the TDI® Clean Diesel models with Premium and Premium and Navigation, GLI Autobahn, and GLI Autobahn with Navigation models.

Engines and Transmission
The 2013 Jetta line-up will feature an unprecedented five engine options, including the gasoline 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder, 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder, 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder, and 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel.

The 2.0-liter four that powers the Jetta S and Jetta S with Sunroof models features two valves per cylinder and sequential multi-point fuel injection to deliver 115 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque. It's offered with a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) With the five-speed, the EPA fuel economy is estimated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.

Volkswagen's proven 2.5L is offered in the 2013 Jetta SE, SE with Convenience, SE with Convenience and Sunroof, and SEL models. It features chain-driven double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, and maintenance-free hydraulic valves. It makes 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque and is available with a five-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic. With the manual gearbox, EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

Powering the Jetta GLI models—the GLI, GLI Autobahn, and GLI Autobahn with Navigation—is Volkswagen's award-winning double-overhead cam, 16-valve, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine that produces 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. While it gives the GLI exhilarating performance, it is also highly efficient with its EPA-estimated economy of 24 mpg city and 32 mpg on the highway when equipped with Volkswagen's fast-shifting DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

A favorite engine choice among Jetta buyers is the highly efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel engine that produces 140 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. With either the standard six-speed manual transmission or the DSG automatic, the Jetta TDI can, according to EPA estimates, average 30 mpg in the city and an impressive 42 mpg on the highway. That enables the Jetta TDI to cover up to 609 miles on a single tank.

Suspension
All Jetta models are fitted with a strut-type front suspension with coil springs, telescopic dampers and an anti-roll bar. At the rear, with the exception of the dynamic new Jetta GLI, there is a torsion beam with coil springs, telescopic dampers, and an anti-roll bar. With this torsion beam layout, two trailing arms are linked by means of a stiff crossmember. The advantages of the layout include excellent directional stability when cornering, a smooth ride, and a compact, space-saving design.

The sportier GLI, which rides 0.6 inches lower than other Jetta models, gets a sophisticated multilink independent rear suspension that features three transverse and one longitudinal link per wheel. This enables the longitudinal and transverse dynamics to be precisely configured almost independently of each other. The result is a more agile, responsive and precise handling. The GLI also features, as standard, the impressive XDS® Cross Differential System.

Safety and Security
Safety in the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta starts with an extraordinarily stiff and rigid bodyshell constructed using seamless laser welding and high-strength steel in key areas. The front of the car is also crash-optimized, featuring impact-absorbing elements integrated into the front structure which compress under impact.

Also standard on all Jetta models are driver and front passenger front and side thorax airbags and Side Curtain Protection® airbags front and rear. There is also a standard suite of advanced electronic safety aids, like Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA).

Volkswagen's Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) reacts instantly in an accident when the airbags are deployed. It unlocks the doors, turns off the fuel pump, and even activates the car's hazard lights.

And as with all Volkswagen models, the 2012 Jetta is covered under the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. All scheduled maintenance is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty—three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

VOLKSWAGEN JETTA HYBRID SETS PRODUCTION CAR LAND SPEED RECORD AT BONNEVILLE WORLD FINALS

• Turbocharged Jetta Hybrid sets SCTA H/PS production car record, averaging 186.313 mph over two runs—on 1.4 liters!
• Car sets another fastest hybrid time, passing 300 km/h with a run at 187.147 mph

Bonneville Salt Flats, Útah - After becoming the world's fastest hybrid at Bonneville in August, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid LSR returned to the Salt Flats on October 5th to break the Southern California Timing Association's (SCTA) H/PS land speed record. The class is for production cars with engines of less than 1.5 liters that use forced induction.

Motor Trend Associate Road Test Editor Carlos Lago averaged 186.313 mph over two runs during the SCTA's World Finals event, eclipsing the previous record by 18.8 mph. In the course of making his second run, Lago averaged 187.147 mph for the last mile, beating the magical 300 km/h mark. This is also the fastest run recorded by a hybrid, beating the185.394 mph set by the same car back in August.

'We're very proud that the Jetta Hybrid has not only posted the fastest speed for a hybrid at Bonneville, but that it has gone out and broken an SCTA land speed record as well,' said Jonathan Browning, CEO and President, Volkswagen Group of America. 'Achieving this record at Bonneville shows that the all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid is a distinctly different offering in the compact hybrid class, offering excellent fuel economy while retaining the fun-to-drive nature expected from a Volkswagen.'

Lago drove a Jetta Hybrid specially modified to run in the SCTA's H/PS class. The all-new 2013 Jetta Hybrid marries a 1.4-liter turbocharged, direct-injection four-cylinder TSI® gasoline engine with a seven-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission and an electric motor. The combined output of the engine and electric motor is 170 horsepower, along with 184 pound-feet of torque.

Because the Jetta Hybrid runs in a production-car class, modifications are strictly controlled by the SCTA. The suspension was lowered, special Salt Flat wheels and tires fitted, and the interior was stripped and outfitted with full safety equipment, such as a rollcage, racing seat and harness, and a full fire suppression system. The powertrain is the area with the most freedom under the rules and was modified by Volkswagen R&D in Wolfsburg, Germany, in order to make the kind of horsepower needed to run at such high speeds at Bonneville—in this case, somewhere around 300 hp.

2013 Volkswagen JettaProject integration and other modifications to enable the car to run safely on the salt were handled by A-Salt Racing and Advanced Product Engineering, based in Camarillo, California. The implementation and final calibration of the drivetrain in the car was supported by the engineers from the Volkswagen Test Center California in Oxnard, CA.

'We are really proud that our new Jetta Hybrid has taken the land speed record for its class,' said Marc Trahan, Executive Vice President, Group Quality. 'This was a fascinating project for our engineering team in Wolfsburg, who had to integrate the complex hybrid elements and generate a lot of additional power in a very short period of time in order to take the record. The Jetta Hybrid LSR project shows both the sporty nature of our hybrid offering and the technical excellence of our engineers in Wolfsburg and the Test Center California.'

Volkswagen chose to partner with Motor Trend because it is one of the premier automotive enthusiast outlets in the world, with 1.1 million subscribers to the magazine, 5.5 million unique visitors to motortrend.com per month, and an increasingly popular YouTube channel that has 405,000 subscribers. Carlos Lago, who drove the Jetta, said: 'It was an honor to drive the car on the Salt—and also pretty exciting. Driving in a straight line may look easy, but it's a real art to get the power down on the salt and you had better be paying attention to crosswinds, as they can really blow the car off course. Now I have the bug, I really want to become a member of the exclusive 200-mph club at Bonneville. Maybe next year?'

Production version in Los Angeles: New Jetta Hybrid - high-tech saloon sets high standards at 45 mpg

2013 Volkswagen Jetta
• Drive system alliance of silent E-motor and dynamic turbocharged engine

• New Jetta Hybrid from Volkswagen drives in pure electric mode at push of a button

Wolfsburg / Los Angeles, 28 November 2012 - Volkswagen of America is now launching one of the world's most efficient automobiles on the market: the new Jetta Hybrid. It is powered by a high-tech turbo petrol engine (TSI with 110 kW / 150 PS) and a zero-emissions electric motor (20 kW) working in a fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly alliance. Power transmission is managed by one of the most advanced and efficient automatic gearboxes: the 7-speed DSG from Volkswagen. While this hybrid drive enables very impressive driving performance (0-60 mph in less than 9 seconds), the new Jetta Hybrid also produces an extremely low (combined) fuel economy value of 45 mpg*. This means that the sporty saloon consumes about 20 per cent less fuel than a comparably powered car with a conventional drive system.

At the press of a button, the driver can also choose to drive the new Jetta Hybrid in pure electric mode, and therefore with zero emissions, at speeds of up to 44 mph and over a distance of 1.3 miles (depending on terrain and operating conditions).

Extremely quiet. After the Touareg Hybrid, the Jetta Hybrid is now the second model from Europe's most successful carmaker to have a drive module under the bonnet containing a petrol engine and an electric motor that are paired to attain the lowest possible fuel consumption values and excellent performance in all areas. Consider its comfort: in combination, the refined TSI, a newly designed exhaust system, use of an acoustic windshield, thicker side windows in front and various other measures have resulted in the quietest car Volkswagen has ever offered in this class.

TSI is one of the world's most advanced turbo petrol engines

Pure efficiency.
For the first time in America, Volkswagen is using a 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine in the Jetta Hybrid. The TSI engines from Volkswagen have won various awards, including one of the world's most prestigious in this field: the Engine of the Year Award for 2011.

Practice proven on the German Autobahn. The downsized four-cylinder with a displacement of exactly 1,395 cc millions of units of this engine have already sold in Europe develops a torque of 250 Nm at just over the idling speed (from 1,400 rpm) and is extremely durable even at German Autobahn speeds. The maximum power of this TSI even surpasses that of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine in the conventionally powered Jetta. The highlight is that the remarkably quiet TSI can maintain this constant high maximum torque up to 3,500 rpm. Together with the electric motor, the drive system exhibits performance characteristics that make the new Jetta Hybrid a sporty cruiser. Incidentally, the TSI is a lightweight unit weighing 98 kg.

TSI, decoupling clutch and E-motor form the hybrid module2013 Volkswagen Jetta
High-tech alliance. The TSI, the electric motor and a decoupling clutch form the hybrid module. This is integrated between the two drives and fully disengages the petrol engine from the drivetrain when in pure electric driving mode or 'sailing' mode (coasting / braking).

State-of-the-art battery technology. A lithiumion battery supplies the energy for driving the electric motor. The compact battery system is integrated behind the rear bench seat. The results: no compromises whatsoever in interior space. The battery is constructed of 60 individual cells, each with an energy capacity of 5 Ah; altogether, they produce a nominal voltage of 220 Volt and an energy capacity of 1.1 kWh. Weight: 35.8 kg. The frequent alternation of discharging and charging cycles in hybrid operation requires high-performance battery cooling, which in this case is handled by a fan mounted directly on the energy storage device. The battery also has its own management system that performs safety, diagnostic and monitoring functions as well as temperature management. Need-based control of the fan (as a function of such factors as outside temperature and momentary power demand) ensures that the battery continually operates within an optimal temperature window. Special protection systems also electrically disconnect the battery when not in use or in case of a crash.

Fast dual-clutch gearbox. Power transfer to the driven front axle is managed by a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox (DSG) that operates quickly and efficiently; it was developed in Germany and has already revolutionised the market for automatic gearboxes. The combination of a hybrid drive and DSG is unique here, because it merges driving fun with sustainability. The proven 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox sets the benchmark in this torque class - with torques of up to 250 newton meters based on its low weight of 74 kg and very compact construction. Thanks to its lightweight drive components, the weight of the Jetta Hybrid was only increased by 100 kg despite the battery system. Together with additional safety modifications to the vehicle structure, the gross weight of the new Jetta Hybrid is still less than 1,500 kg.

The right drive system mode for every situation

2013 Volkswagen Jetta
Zero emissions driving by electric motor. When the battery of the Jetta Hybrid is sufficiently charged, the Volkswagen can, as mentioned, be driven over a distance of up to 1.3 miles in pure electric mode and therefore with zero emissions. The Jetta Hybrid is switched to electric drive mode either automatically (up to 37 mph) or manually (up to 44 mph) by pressing the E-mode button to the right of the gear shift lever. In both cases, the TSI is disengaged from the drivetrain by a decoupling clutch, which reduces energy consumption and increases electric driving range. About one-third of the fuel-saving potential in the Jetta Hybrid is realised by electric driving.
Battery charging by regeneration. During braking, the Jetta Hybrid switches over to a battery regeneration mode, which 'captures' kinetic energy and feeds it into the battery as electrical energy. This is how it works: As soon as the driver releases the gas pedal to brake, the decoupling clutch opens to disengage the engine and reduce drag torque losses in this phase. If the driver now activates the brake pedal, the generating power of the electric motor increases as a function of brake pedal travel and the electrical energy produced in this way is stored in the battery. The stored energy is then available, either for electric driving or boosting. The effect of battery regeneration should not be underestimated; it represents another third of the fuel-saving potential realised in the Jetta Hybrid!

2013 Volkswagen Jetta
New instruments. All relevant operating states are displayed by the instruments of the Jetta Hybrid. The driver calls up information via menus for the new instruments. Únder the 'Hybrid' menu, the currently active drive mode is displayed in an energy flow diagram, and the direction of energy flow is visualised in the form of arrows. The battery charge state is shown on the same screen. Directly below the energy flow diagram is what is known as the ePower meter. This indicates the relative power of the electric motor. The ePower meter is only active in the 'electric driving', 'E-mode' and 'Boost' operating modes.

Power meter shows power source of hybrid drive. Of central importance is the so-called Power meter (not to be confused with the ePower meter). The Power meter a multifunctional display that replaces the tachometer and which is integrated on the left side of the instrument cluster informs the driver of the momentary operating state of the Jetta Hybrid: a general readiness to drive ('Ready'), battery regeneration ('Charge'), eco-friendly driving mode ('Eco'), boosting ('Boost') or pure internal combustion engine driving with the TSI ('Off'). In addition, electric driving either automatic or manually selected by the driver is also indicated in the instruments ('E-mode').

Playfully visualising how efficiently one is driving. The audio system display plays a role in this information strategy. The goal here is an especially economical mode of driving. To realise this goal, the 'Zero emissions' menu offers a graphic display of the car's driving time with zero emissions. The zero emissions values are shown in the form of per centages in a bar diagram, where the measurement interval of one bar represents one minute of driving. A value of 100 per cent means that the Jetta Hybrid was driven with zero emissions throughout the driving minute, i.e. with the TSI engine shut off. A total time period of 30 minutes is considered.

Extensive safety and convenience features

2013 Volkswagen Jetta
Electronically stabilised. Standard equipment in the new Jetta Hybrid includes an electronic stabilisation programme (ESP), anti-lock braking system (ABS) and six airbags (driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags in front as well as window airbags, front and rear). This pack can be extended to include rear side airbags as an option.

SE specified exterior. Visually, even the base version (SE) of the Jetta Hybrid is distinguished by aerodynamic modifications that include a new front spoiler, a rear diffuser and a rear spoiler that is harmoniously integrated into the design. The results: the car's Cd value was improved by 10 per cent. In addition, the Jetta Hybrid SE is equipped with a new LED rear lights design and special 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tyres optimised for low rolling resistance. Hybrid signatures on the front, rear and side body panels identify the new drive version. Other distinguishing features: a special radiator grille where the VW logo is integrated on a blue background for the first time. Exclusively reserved for the Jetta Hybrid is the new body paint 'Oryx white'.

SE upgraded interior. Inside, the car features high-end seat covers in 'Titan black' or 'EcoTech' design and new accent strips with the 'Hybrid' chrome signature, which identify the car as the Jetta Hybrid SE. A 2-zone automatic climate control system (Climatronic) with a new high-voltage air conditioning compressor ensures that the interior can be cooled even without the petrol engine running. Compared to the Climatronic used to date, this system also has the new 'maxAC' function, which cools down the interior very quickly at the press of a button. The technology of the Jetta Hybrid SE was perfected by specific instruments that include an energy flow diagram in the Premium 8 audio system, a trip computer, hands-free telephone system (Bluetooth) and interface for iPod and other multimedia sources as well as a multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel.

SEL1 and SEL2 are high-end. In the mid-level equipment version, the SEL1, standard features of the new Volkswagen are extended with such details as 16-inch alloy wheels, a tilt/slide glass sunroof, RNS 315 navigation system, electric driver's seat adjustment, seat heating in front, and the Keyless Access system for door locking and engine starting via a Start button. Customers who order the top version, the SEL2, can also enjoy details such as 17-inch alloy wheels, newly developed bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights and automatic motorway lights, fog lights, reversing camera and a new Fender sound system with 400 Watts of output power. And that is how it should be. After all, who says that maximum sustainability cannot be fun as well?
