The Porsche Boxster was first put into production as the first-generation 986. Its styling was influenced by the 1992 Boxster concept. It offered a smooth ride and superb handling from its horizontally opposed, overhead cam six-cylinder air-cooled engine displacing 151 cubic-inches. In comparison, the engine in the 911 had a 291.7 cubic-inch displacement. The Boxster produced 201 horsepower while the 911 produced 282 hp. The mid-engine, rear-drive Boxster had a five-speed manual gearbox or an options five-speed automatic. Disc brakes could be found in both the front and the back. A cabriolet was the only bodystyle offered, and had a base price of $40,000.
