For 1991, the BMW M5 was powered by a dual overhead-cam six-cylinder engine displacing 215 cubic-inches and developing 310 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available on all 5-Series models, which consisted of the 525i Sedan, the 535i Sedan, and the M5. The 525i models were powered by a 152 cubic-inch engine offering 190 horsepower while the 535i had a 208 horsepower engine.
The 2.5-liter engine in the 525i was a new engine and featured four valves per cylinder along with hydraulic lifters and dual overhead cams. Another change for 1991 included optional traction control available on the 535i models.
