2000 FORD RANGER

Ford Ranger, America's best-selling compact pickup truck since 1987, adds significant youth appeal for the 2000 model year and some new options that enhance its tough and athletic reputation.

New for 2000
Added appeal comes from the optional Trailhead Group. This 4x2 model with a torsion bar suspension gives the 4x2 the tough look of its 4x4 cousin. Ride height and ground clearance are different from that of conventional 4x2s. The Trailhead sits higher on bigger tires, clearly heightening appeal with Ranger buyers who want that 4x4 look, but don't need the off-road capabilities. The Trailhead Group includes:

• Torsion Bar Front Suspension (similar to 4x4)

• AM/FM stereo with CD

• Styled manual mirrors

• Tachometer

• 4x4 'Off-Road' front tow hooks

• 4x4 'Off-Road' P245/75R 16SL OWL all-terrain tires

• Five-spoke cast aluminum 16-inch wheels

• 4x4-style argent bumpers and grille

• Fog Lamps

• Payload Package #2

Body Styles

With its four-door SuperCab model heading the lineup, Ford Ranger continues its strong appeal to value-conscious truck buyers who want a sporty, rugged pickup that's versatile and fuel efficient.

The optional four-door SuperCab - available in two- and four-wheel-drive -- makes it easy to access the storage compartment from either side of the truck, a big assist when loading cargo and gear. The optional rear doors hinge off the corner pillars of the cab and swing out 90 degrees from the door sill. There are no 'B' pillars to obstruct loading. Rear doors are fitted with side-door intrusion beams for extra safety protection.

Completing the Ford Ranger pickup line is the standard regular cab, short- and long-wheelbase 4x2 and 4x4 models and the optional Flareside short-wheelbase 4x2 and 4x4 models.

Powertrain

The standard engine on 4x2 models is Ford's 2.5-liter sequential fuel injection (SEFI) I-4 engine. A 3.0-liter FFV SEFI V-6 is standard on 4x4 models, and a 4.0-liter SEFI V-6 is available on all models. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual w/overdrive or four-speed automatic w/overdrive for the 2.5L I-4 and 3.0L V-6 engines. A five-speed electronically-controlled automatic overdrive transmission is optional with the 4.0-liter SEFI V-6.

Environmental

The 3.0L FFV engine can burn 100 percent unleaded gasoline, E-85 (85 percent ethanol) or any combination of the two meaning owners can fuel up on E-85 whenever it's available. When E-85 is unavailable, regular unleaded gasoline can be used with no detriment to performance.

Ford Ranger also continues to be available as an electric vehicle (EV). Qualifying as a zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV), Ranger EV is based on the regular cab, 112-inch wheelbase 4x2 model. All components except the battery are covered by the same three-year/36,000-mile warranty as gasoline-fueled Rangers. The EV battery is covered by a two-year, limited warranty

Safety

Ranger's major safety features include second generation dual front air bags, side-impact door beams, standard rear-wheel anti-lock brakes, and optional 4-wheel anti-lock brakes.

Sales and Manufacturing

Ford Ranger was the No.1-selling compact pickup in America for the 12th straight year in 1998, posting sales of 328,136 units and capturing a 4.1 percent share of the truck market.

Ranger is built at Ford's Twin Cities, Minn. and Edison, N.J. assembly plants.
