1968 Plymouth Fury

The Fury was placed on the full-size Chrysler C-Body platform in 1965 and came in three trim levels, the Fury I, Fury II, and Fury III. The Fury I was the entry-level model, while the Fury II and Fury III were given additional trim and features. Full-size Furys had optional automatic transmissions, power steering, stereo radios, air conditioning, vinyl tops, and white sidewall tires. The highest trim level was the Sport Fury which had a sportier interior and exterior trim package.

For 1968, changes were made to the rear end including the rear doors (on four-door body styles), quarter panels, and deck lids. In the front, the grille received minor updates with repositioned moldings in keeping with the company's slim, horizontal shapes. The stand-up hood ornaments were abandoned, and shoulder belts were installed for front outboard occupants (except the convertibles).

The base engine was the 225 Slant Six or optional 318 CID, 388 CID, 440 CID V8s. The six-cylinder overhead valve engine was fitted with a Holley Type R one-barrel carburetor and offered 145 horsepower. The 318 CID V8 had a Carter Type BBD two-barrel carburetor and delivered 230 horsepower. The top-of-the-line 440 CID delivered 375 horsepower. A three-speed manual transmission was standard with an optional four-speed manual or automatic. Standard equipment included front armrests, foam padded cushions, cloth/vinyl seats, rear armrests with ashtrays, carpeting, cigar lighter, glovebox lock, padded dash, energy-absorbing front seatbacks, left outside rearview mirror, emergency flasher, seat belts, padded visor, two-speed wipers with washers, a dual brake system with warning light, inside day/night mirror, and Safety-Rim wheels.

The Plymouth Fury III trim level was the most versatile of the Furys, consisting of 8 body style options, including a sedan, hardtop sedan, hardtop coupe, FastTop Coupe, 6- and 9-passenger station wagon, and a convertible. Nearly 29,000 buyers selected the Fury I, 59,284 the Fury II, and 195,033 the Fury III. Just over 26,200 buyers purchased the Sport Fury.

The Plymouth Fury III added dual taillamps, bright upper door moldings, wheel opening moldings, trunk and glove box lights, Fury III badges, and an electric clock. The Sport Furys included the items found on the Fury III plus bucket seats, an all-vinyl interior, sport wheel covers, rocker panel moldings, fender-mounted turn signals, a choice of center armrest bench seat or console, combination map and courtesy light, ignition switch lamp with time delay shutoff, and Sporty Fury designation.

Above the Sport Fury was the VIP, available as a hardtop sedan, FastTop coupe, and a 6- or 9-passenger station wagon. They had all the items of the Fury III, except the bucket seats, plus a deluxe cloth and vinyl interior, front-seat center armrest, VIP designation, nylon carpeting, and rear pillar courtesy lamps.
