The Isuzu Axiom was produced for only a short period of time, lasting from 2002 through 2004. It replaced the Trooper and soon it was replaced by the Isuzu Ascender for the 2005 model year. The name 'Axiom' was suggested by Dr. Hakan Urey from Redmond, Washington. The name had been part of a contest held by Isuzu and Dr. Urey's entry was chosen as the winner, netting him a new Axiom.
The Axiom came equipped with a torque on demand four-wheel drive system. In 2004, a direct-injection engine was added, increasing the horsepower from 230 to 250. This made them the first marque to offer direct-injection in a vehicle priced under $100,000.
The Isuzu Axiom had bold styling that many felt was controversial. A few of the elements would make their way into future vehicles and SUVs from other manufacturers. It was available only as a luxury vehicle, which hindered the vehicles sales. In July of 2004, the Axiom was discontinued. The Axiom had been built at the Lafayette, Indiana plant; when production ceased, the plant was retooled for building the Subaru B9 Tribeca.
