2002 Pontiac Grand Am news, pictures, and information

Since its introduction, Grand Am has traced its success to its athletic design, responsive handling, fully independent suspension and driver-focused interior. Improvements for 2003 help solidify that position, setting it apart from the rest of its class.

Powerplants
Grand Am will continue to offer a choice of two powerplants: the responsive and efficient Ecotec 2.2L L4 and the proven and powerful 3.4L V6.

Grand Am's Ecotec 2.2L inline four delivers excellent performance (140 horsepower at 5600 rpm) without sacrificing smooth, unobtrusive operation. Its twin balance shafts, all-aluminum construction and outstanding structural rigidity mean first-rate noise, vibration and harshness control. The Ecotec was designed for minimal maintenance and features an innovative paper-only oil filter cartridge for easy replacement and disposal. A hydraulic tensioner keeps the timing chain adjusted for life, and extended-life spark plugs deliver 100,000 miles of service. The DOHC, 16-valve base powerplant delivers performance, efficiency, low maintenance and smooth operation, with technology familiar in premium V-configured engines, including all-aluminum construction and hydraulic roller-finger valve operation.

Grand Am's other engine choices offer even more power. The 3400 V6 engine that's standard on SE2 (optional in other SE editions) delivers 170 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 195 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Grand Am GTs up the ante with a standard Ram Air version of the same engine equipped with cold-air induction and lower-restriction exhaust. These enhancements boost output to 175 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 205 lb-ft (278 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm.

All Grand Ams have 5-mph bumpers, air-conditioning, tilt steering wheel, programmable door locks with lockout protection, battery rundown protection, an electric remote trunk release, an oil life monitor, the PASSLock II theft deterrent, a sealed-for-life transmission and illuminated entry with theater dimming.

Grand Am also has a world-class body structure designed with advanced computer-aided techniques to optimize stiffness while minimizing weight. Grand Am's 25 Hz body rigidity sets a standard for the compact class.

A four-wheel independent suspension builds on the foundation. Aluminum suspension knuckles reduce unsprung weight for responsive ride and handling. Torque-axis powertrain mounting uses two mounts to support the mass of the engine and transaxle and two others specifically tuned to resist torque and damp idle vibrations. Mounting Grand Am's power rack-and-pinion steering system directly to the hydroformed chassis cradle provides precise on-center feel with excellent isolation of road disturbances.
