2002 Porsche 911 Carrera

Porsche has significantly enhanced the 911 Carrera models for 2002, their fourth model year, giving them a larger, more powerful engine and a new look inspired by the 911 Turbo. The line includes the 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet and the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. A new version of the 911 Carrera 4 Coupe will be released later in the model year. While keeping their unmistakable 911 profile, the 2002 models adopt the headlight design of the 911 Turbo, plus a newly shaped front end, widened rear quarter panels, and redesigned oval exhaust tailpipes.

All models benefit from a strengthened body structure, which enhances handling, ride quality and safety. The design changes benefit performance, increasing airflow to the radiators by 15 percent and reducing aerodynamic lift on both the front and rear suspension. The Bi-Xenon gas-discharge headlights that are standard on the 911 Turbo are a new option for the 911 Carrera models.

Porsche enlarged the displacement of the six-cylinder boxer engine in the 911 Carrera models to 3.6 liters from 3.4 liters and increased horsepower to 320 from 300. Peak torque increases to 273 lb.-ft. at 4,250 rpm from 258 lb.-ft. at 4,600 rpm, and the torque curve is now broader overall for enhanced response at all speeds. The new VarioCam® Plus valve timing and lift system – similar to that used on the 911 Turbo – helps boost torque. Porsche optimized suspension tuning for the enhanced performance, and new-design Carrera II 17-inch alloy wheels reduce unsprung weight.

2002 Porsche 911 CarreraThe 911 Carrera models gain new seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters. A three-spoke sports steering wheel replaces the previous four-spoke wheel, and the center vents have also been redesigned. The remote entry system now controls memory function when the optional power seats are ordered. A new optional Bose® digital sound system replaces previous sound system upgrades. The newly standard onboard computer uses an LCD screen in the tachometer to display information including fuel consumption and driving range, engine oil level, outside temperature and 35 different warning messages in plain text. New exterior colors include Black, Basalt Black Metallic and Carrera White.

The 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet all-wheel drive system uses a viscous multi-plate clutch mounted just behind the front differential. The Cabriolet features a fully automatic power roof, an automatic deploying supplemental safety bar structure, and a standard removable aluminum hardtop. A glass rear window with integral defroster replaces the polycarbonate window in the Cabriolet. Safety technology includes a patented crumple-zone body structure, dual front airbags, door-mounted side airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS). The Porsche Stability Management System (PSM) is standard on the 911 Carrera 4 and optional for the 911 Carrera.

The 2002 Carrera 4S combines the 3.6-liter, 320-horsepower normally aspirated 911 Carrera engine with the all-wheel drive chassis, body design and feature content of the 911 Turbo. The 911 Carrera 4S replaces the 911 Carrera 4 Coupe in the Porsche line.

The Carrera 4S shares the 911 Turbo's basic body shell but adds unique design elements. Instead of the Turbo's two-piece rear spoiler, the Carrera 4S retains the automatic-deploying rear spoiler used on other 911 Carrera models. From the rear, the quick tip-off to the model's identity is its exclusive reflector strip connecting the taillights. The Carrera 4S deletes the Turbo's large intake ducts ahead of the rear wheels, since these are only required on the Turbo to supply air to the turbo intercoolers. The 911 Carrera 4S does retain the Turbo's lower rear quarter panel louvers.
