SATURN S-SERIES REMAINS A LEADER IN VALUE, SAFETY AND CUSTOMER SATISFACTION
New For 2002 • New optional aluminum 15-inch wheel for SC2
• New SL2 wheel cover
• New exterior colors: New Silver (all models, replaces previous Light Silver); Silver Blue (SL1 and SL2, replaces Grey Bronze); Cranberry (SL, replaces Grey Bronze); Orange (SC1 and SC2, replaces Green)
• Two-tone black/grey leather option replaces tan leather option on SC2
• Floor mats standard in SL2 and SC2; part of option package in SL1 and SC1; retailer-installed accessory in SL
For Saturn, it all started wîth the S-Series. The launch of this car line in 1990 marked the beginning of a revolution in the way vehicles are designed, built, sold and serviced.
Enhanced by a variety of updates and improvements over the years, the S-Series has remained a consistent leader in value, safety and customer satisfaction. For 2002, this tradition continues as the S-Series delivers a combination of attractive styling, dependable performance and innovative features – many that customers expect on much higher-priced models, such as optional head-curtain air bags.
The 2002 S-Series sedan models are the SL, SL1 and SL2. The S-Series also features the world's only three-door coupe, available as the SC1 and SC2.
Dent-resistant polymer panels
The 2002 S-Series models retain the dent-resistant polymer body panels that help keep Saturns lòòking new, longer, by helping to prevent parking-lot dings and rust. The revolutionary driver's side third door – a standard feature on all coupes – provides increased accessibility to the rear seat without detracting from the coupe's sporty lines. This unique added convenience makes it easier to load or unload cargo, to install a child seat, or for a passenger to enter or exit. For 2002, a new optional 15-inch aluminum wheel enhances the exterior styling of the uplevel SC2, while the SL2 receives a new wheel cover.
Safety features
Saturn's commitment to safety is reflected by the availability of head curtain air bags, designed to reduce the severity of head and neck injuries in side impact collisions, in addition to frontal air bags. Available as an option on all S-Series vehicles, the head-curtain air bag system is stored along the vehicle's body side upper roof rail behind the headliner and garnish trim. Based on feedback from electronic sensors located along the sides of the vehicle, the air bag drops from the roof rail and unfolds as it inflates, providing a cushion to help protect the head and neck region.Driver and front-passenger air bags are standard equipment. Three-point active seat belts are included for all outboard positions. Also standard are top tether anchors for child safety seats.
Another Saturn safety feature is a trunk latch designed to help reduce incidences of trunk entrapment. This latch requires a lever to be manually reset before the trunk lid will close. To further enhance safety, the trunk is equipped wîth an escape handle that glows in the dark, making it more visible to young children who may become trapped in a trunk.
SOHC or DOHC
All Saturn S-Series models are powered by 1.9-liter, 4-cylinder engines that provide high levels of durability, performance and economy. The SL, SL1 and SC1 are powered by a single overhead cam (SOHC) version that produces 100 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 114 lb-ft of torque at 2400 rpm. The SL2 and SC2 come wîth a 16-valve, dual overhead cam (DOHC) version. This sequential port fuel-injection system produces 124 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 122 lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm.
A five-speed manual gearbox is standard on all models, and features close-ratio gearing for improved performance when mated wîth the DOHC engine, and wide-ratio gearing for better fuel economy on models wîth the SOHC version of the 4-cylinder engine. A four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is available as an option on all models except the SL.
All S-Series vehicles are available wîth California or Northeastern Emissions packages. Additionally, the SOHC engine features an Air Injection Reaction System, warm-up converters on the exhaust manifolds and a cylinder head assembly wîth a revised combustion chamber, enabling it to meet Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) requirements.
A built-in oil life monitor alerts the driver when the calculated usable oil life is 90 percent depleted. A computer algorithm monitors vehicle mileage, engine revolutions and engine temperature in order to alert customers to the need of changing the engine oil.
Steel Space Frame
Saturn's steel space frame provides an impressive combination of benefits. Thanks in part to computer-aided design techniques, the space frame provides stiffness for optimum ride and handling characteristics. It also provides front and rear crumple zones to help absorb the impact of a crash, while protecting the occupants wîth a rigid passenger compartment.
Power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes are standard. For increased braking performance, a four-wheel anti-lock brake system that includes traction control is available on all models.
A constant-flow power-assist system that maintains §teering effort at an even rate is standard on SL, SL1 and SC1. SL2 and SC2 models deliver a sportier feel thanks to a variable-effort power §teering system that increases effort as vehicle speed increases.
Performance accessories
Saturn is introducing a set of retailer-installed accessories for consumers interested in customizing and personalizing an S-Series coupe. The vehicle appearance and performance-enhancing accessories are expected to be available late summer of 2001. Saturn is responding to the growing number of young car buyers who want to modify their vehicles to suit their individual tastes.Source - Saturn
Built on the Z-body platform and developed entirely in-house as Saturn, the S-series was sold from the fall of 1990 through the end of the 2002 model year. shared very little in common with the rest of the GE model line. Part of a family of compact cars from the Saturn automobile company the S-series featured a spaceframe design that was also seen on various Pontiacs and means that the side panels didn't carry load and could use plastic pieces instead of metal. A huge selling point for Saturn through its later models, the polymer panels were dent-resistant.
Featured in 1990 as 1991 models, the S-series debuted with SC and SL models. In 1992 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit the SW wagon debuted.
The only two foreign countries that imported Saturn vehicles were Taiwan and Japan. First and second generation sedans along with first-generation coupes were sold in Taiwan from 1992 until 1996. Second-generation versions were sold in right-hand drive in Japan from 1996 until 2003.
The SC was updated and received a small suicide door on the driver's side partway through the 1999 model year. Previously used in extended cab pickup trucks, this type of door was an innovation in coupe design. Among the most fuel-efficient cars available at the time, coupes and sedans equipped with a manual transmission reached 40 miles per gallon in EPA highway tests.
On July 30, 1990 the first Saturn left the assembly line in the Spring Hill, Tennessee factory. ‘91 and '92 model year Saturn's showcased the base ‘SL' which was available with a manual transmission only, an 'SL1', ‘SL2' and ‘SC'. The line expanded to include the SW1 and SW2 wagons in '93, these models were mechanically identical to their SL1 and SL2 counterparts. In 1995 all models featured an interior redesign.
All S-Series vehicles were available with either a 5-speed manual transmission of a 4-speed automatic transmission. The SOHC equipped model's transmissions were focused towards economy while DOHC-equipped vehicles were geared to enhance acceleration.
Introduced in 1991, first generation SC models originally came in only one trim level with a DOHC 1.9 L I4 LLO engine. Two years later the original SC trim level was renamed SC2 and an SC1 trim level debuted. For 1995 the first generation SC2 received a minor update with redesigns in the lower front bumper, the trunk lid reflector and interior.
The SC1 was created as a base-level coupe and debuted in 1993. Featuring an SOHC 1.9 L I4 LK0 engine, it was rated at 85 hp and later upgraded to the 100 hp L24 engine for 1995. Obvious differences between the first generation SC1 and up level SC2 were found in the completely different front fascia that lacked the pop-up headlights and a slightly different rear. The SC1 also did not have a trunk lid reflector.
From 1996 until 2002 the second generation of the SL and SW were featured with a slight refresh of the lineup for 2000. The result of this update was a more defined curve look for both the SL and SW. This increased the interior room and doorway size as well. Not much was changed mechanically though 1996 was the first year for the OBDII PCM.
Both SOHC and DOHC engines received improvements on their engines in 1999 but it did not affect power output, it only resulted in smoothing some of the harshness associated with them. The pistons and connecting rods were revised as well. For 2000 the model received a slight facelift that involved redesigning the interior and exterior polymer panels. This redesign added 1.2 inches to the overall length.
The second generation of the Saturn SC was introduced in 1997 and ran until 2002. A refresh was done in 2001. An equal wheelbase across all models was accomplished by moving the second generation SC to the longer wheelbase of the SL/SW models.
For 1996 the Saturn SC featured a new look and standard on all models was a new sequential-port fuel injection system. To meet 1997 side impact safety standards all models now came equipped with driver and front passenger 3-point active safety belts and airbags. Also new for this year were daytime running lights equipped on all SC models Both the SC1 and SC2 models are available with four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, cruise control, traction control, power locks and power windows. Leather appointments are offered optionally on the SC2.
For 1998 the SC1 featured new, optional aluminum wheels while the coupe model exteriors remained relatively unchanged. The new exterior color for the year is blue. Reduced force airbags were incorporated into the SC model lineup for 1998. The SC2 featured adjustable front seat headrests. To reduce overall noise and improve durability, structural improvements to the engine block and transmission case housings were done. The transmission shift points were revised on automatic transmissions to provide less hunting and to improve downshift quality. Traction control was included on optional ABS system.By Jessica Donaldson
