1999 Kia Sportage news, pictures, and information

The first Kia Sportage was produced ontop of the Mazda Bongo platform. It was a smaller SUV, sold in either a two-door soft top or four-door bodystyles. The vehicles were sold in low numbers and were even recalled on two occasions for problems with the rear wheels dismounting while in use. The Sportage, however, was the first vehicle to be equipped with a knee airbag.

Production of the Kia Sportage continued in the North American market until 2002; worldwide, it continued until 2003.

The Sportage was out of the market for two years before the next generation was introduced. It was built ontop of the Hyundai Elantra and Tucson platform, and was Kias first crossover SUV. In comparison to the first generation, the Sportage has become more tamed - better suited for road use and less for 'off-roading'

The Sportage is available with an optional V6 engine which offers over 170 horsepower. It rests comfortably on a 103.5-inch wheelbase and has both front- and four-wheel drive capability.
