The Subaru Vivio was produced from 1992 through 1998. A small 658cc engine with the addition of a supercharger gave the driver an available 52 horsepower. The engine size was kept small in order to avoid taxes. Not to overwork the engines, the Vivio was kept small, measuring just 129.7-inches in length and weighing a mere 650 kg. They were available in 3 and 5-door versions.

The name 'Vivio' was inspired by the word 'Vivid' and from the Latin numbers '660' - in reference to its engine displacement. This micro-car was popular in Japan, replaced the Subaru Rex, and was replaced by the Subaru Pleo. These three models were 'Kei' or 'Keijidosha' cars which means 'Light automobiles.' The Kei category were small cars meant to exploit local tax and insurance regulations. They are also often exempt from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle.
