The Geo Storm was produced from 1990 through 1993 and was available as a 3-door hatchback or as a 2-door station wagon. It was powered by a four cylinder engine coming in three flavors, a 1.6-liter SOHC, 1.6-liter DOHC, and a 1.8-liter DOHC. A five speed manual gearbox was standard while a 3-speed automatic was available as optional equipment.
The Geo Storm was sold by General Motors but manufactured by Isuzu. It was a stripped-down and rebadged version of the Isuzu Impulse. The all-wheel drive system, turbocharger, and Lotus-tuned suspension had been removed. The Storm was small and designed to be sporty and economical, both in fuel economy and in its sticker-price.
The base price of about $10,400 included the 1.6-liter SOHC engine rated at 95 horsepower. The GSi package, costing around $11,700, included the DOHC version rated at 130 horsepower, a spoiler, modified gearing on the transmission, and a rear anti-sway bar.
In 1992 the Storm received minor updates including the removal of the pop-up headlights. The cost of the GSi increased in 1993 to over $13,600, due in part to the new 1.8-liter engine rated at 140 horsepower.
The Geo Storm was a strong seller for General Motors, one of their best selling small cars during that time. It could easily carry four passengers, albeit the smaller they were the more comfortable the ride. Due to the sloping of the rear window, there was limited head room in back seat. Passengers traveling in the rear seats often bumped their heads on the glass roof when traveling over bumps.
The demise of the Storm was the result of poor sales of the Isuzu Impulse. Once production ceased on the Impulse, the Strom followed.
