Production plans for the Cayenne were announced in the summer of 1998, when it also was announced that the Porsche SÚV would have permanent four-wheel drive and true off-road capability while maintaining Porsche standards for ride and handling.
While the Cayenne's engines were designed at Porsche's Research and Development Center in Weissach, Germany, and will be built in the Porsche factory at Zuffenhausen, the Porsche SÚV will be assembled in a brand new factory located in historic Leipzig, Germany.
Taking the Porsche experience to a new level, the Cayenne is designed to create a perfect balance of performance and power, delivering an optimum blend of supreme on-pavement and equally outstanding off-pavement driving qualities. The car is to make its international debut in late 2002.
The Cayenne will be introduced in two versions, the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo.
A 4.5-liter V8 engine rated at 340 horsepower (DIN) and 310 pound-feet of torque will power the Cayenne S. It will accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.2 seconds on its way to a top test-track speed of 150 mph (242 km/h).
The Cayenne Turbo will be powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the 4.5-liter V8. The boosted engine will provide an incredible 450 horsepower (DIN) and 460 pound-feet of torque. The Cayenne Turbo will accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in only 5.6 seconds and can achieve a top test-track speed of 165 mph (266 km/h).
The Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo will feature a new six-speed Tiptronic® S automatic transmission as standard equipment.
Both Cayenne models will have permanent four-wheel drive, an inter-axle d i ff e rential lock and additional low-range gears, the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system, and the capability to tow 7,716 pounds (3,500 kilograms). Both will ride on wheels that range from 18 inches to 20 inches in diameter.Source - Porsche

Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, will soon add the planned third version to the Cayenne model range. The excellent road dynamics, safety and off-road performance that have earned the eight-cylinder Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo models worldwide praise, will shortly be available in an entry-level model wîth a six-cylinder engine, to be known simply as the 'Cayenne'.
This is the first Porsche wîth V6 power and will be available in the ÚK in the first half of 2004. The Cayenne will be priced at £34,350 including value added tax.
Porsche's engineers have developed the basic engine, which comes from an outside supplier, and modified it to increase both power and torque to make it the perfect addition to the Cayenne model range.
The engine, wîth four valves per cylinder, has a power output of 250 bhp (184 kW) at 6,000 rpm and the nominal torque is 310 Nm between 2,500 rpm and 5,500 rpm, wîth 300 Nm available from just over 2,000 rpm up until 5,500 rpm. This version of the Cayenne accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 9.1 seconds and has a top speed of 214 km/h (133 mph). The V6 model also has a new design of six-speed manual gearbox which will be available as standard, wîth a built-in low ratio gearbox and lockable centre differential.
The new Porsche Cayenne will also be available wîth an innovative assistance system, 'Porsche Drive Off Assistant' (PDOA), which helps the driver to set the vehicle in motion on an uphill gradient and prevents it from slipping back by applying the brakes automatically. When the driver engages the clutch, the system reduces braking pressure, so that the Cayenne can move off safely.
The six-cylinder Cayenne also features such technical highlights as the intelligent 'Porsche Traction Management' (PTM), already introduced for the eight-cylinder engines. In the standard operating mode, PTM distributes engine power in a 62:38 ratio between the rear and front wheels, and up to 100 per-cent of the available torque can be allocated to the front or rear wheels via an electronically controlled centre differential, depending on the level of available traction. PTM actively influences the Cayenne's longitudinal and lateral dynamics. Depending on the driving situation, it provides greater dynamic stability and more responsive handling. This driving aid is co-ordinated and controlled by state-of-the-art electronics permanently connected to the standard 'Porsche Stability Management' (PSM). This results in outstanding performance and a high degree of driving safety, ideally complemented by excellent off-road capabilities.
The six-cylinder model has the same maximum trailer load of 3,500 kilograms as the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo.
Air suspension wîth a self-levelling function and ride height adjustment, including the 'Porsche Active Suspension Management' (PASM) variable shock absorber system, is available as an optional extra on this 250-bhp Cayenne.
For the first time too, a special off-road navigation facility is an optional extra for the 'Porsche Communication Management' (PCM) wîth navigation system.Source - Porsche
