Introduced for the start of the 2001 model year, the compact Suzuki Aerio replaced the Suzuki Esteem/Baleno. Manufactured by the Suzuki Motor Corporation, the Suzuki Aerio is also known as ‘Liana' in Europe, Australia and South Asia. The Aerio can be placed between lower mid-size segment in the Japanese and European markets and the subcompact segment in the North American market. Featured as either a 5-door hatchback in an SX trim, or as a 4-door sedan in either an S or GS trim. Both models came standard with a manual transmission, though automatic transmission and all wheel drive were both optional features for either model. Throughout the 2003 model year, the very agile Aerio was powered by a 2.0-liter engine that delivered 145 horsepower.

The new vehicle came with a well-known reputation as an inexpensive ride with good gas mileage. Unfortunately, the Suzuki Aerio lacked any truly unique features that made it stand out among the already crowed compact car industry. Though both the hatchback and sedan models were speedy and efficient, they lacked in area of eye-catching design. Considered quite versatile though, the hatchback model did feature an impressive 64 cubic feet of cargo space once the rear seat was folded down.
In 2003 Suzuki released a sportier SUV-like model, the Aerio SX. For the 2004 model year the Aerio received a larger engine. The size was increased to a 2.3 liter that achieved 155 horsepower. The following year the Aerio was completely redesigned and showcased a brand new flashy interior with an all new modified exterior. To add to the functional utility look of the car, a user friendly and readable red glowing gauges replaced the earlier digital instrument panel. A new more convenient storage compartment was also added to the new Suzuki Aerio. The exterior of the car also received a standard rear spoiler that added a more sporty look and feel the vehicle.
For 2005, the Suzuki Aerio was updated further to become a more efficient model.
Only available as a 4-door sedan in base and premium trim levels as of the 2007 model year, the Aerio still features base models that are reasonably equipped. Premium trims featured new heated outside mirrors, a high quality audio system and premium alloy wheels. The 07 model still featured the same impressive 2.3 liter engine. The standard equipment package continued to include a 5-speed manual transmission while the premium trim includes a 4-speed automatic transmission.
Either all wheel drive or front wheel drive versions are available on both trim levels. The interior space was impressive due to the high roof line. Trunk space was also quite roomy with an available 14.6 cubic feet.
Today the Suzuki Aerio model is priced between $13,999 and $16,223.
