2003 PONTIAC GRAND AM - REFRESHED AND REFINED TO DELIVER SPORTS CAR EXCITEMENT WITH ROOM FOR EVERYDAY LIFE

Since its introduction, Grand Am has traced its success to its athletic design, responsive handling, fully independent suspension and driver-focused interior. Improvements for 2003 help solidify that position, setting it apart from the rest of its class.

Refreshed SE exterior
The 2003 Grand Am SE2 - as do all SE sedan models - features contemporary exterior changes designed to increase the vehicle's appeal to younger buyers. The bodyside cladding has been removed and the front and rear fascias are now smooth. Body-colored spear bodyside molding accentuates the contemporary look. The result is a clean, refined appearance.

New SE2 sedan
For 2003, Grand Am offers its SE customers a vehicle that is even more fully equipped. The SE2 sedan - the uplevel model in the SE family - delivers more power, more standard equipment and more available options than the rest of the SE lineup.

The 3400 3.4L V6 engine powers the 2003 Grand Am SE2 sedan. Featuring sequential fuel injection, this powerplant delivers 170 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 195 lb-ft torque at 4000 rpm. It is mated to the standard Hydra-Matic 4T45-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.

Grand Am customers who choose the SE2 sedan receive 15-inch twin five-spoke aluminum wheels and P225/60R15 touring blackwall tires as standard equipment. Ensuring agile handling is the same four-wheel independent suspension found in all Grand Am SE derivatives, while the responsive power rack-and-pinion steering provides precise steering.

The 2003 Grand Am SE2 is designed to appeal to compact sedan customers who prefer a well equipped vehicle. SE2 features standard items like air conditioning, a center console with integral arm rest, cruise control, programmable power door locks, full instrumentation, remote keyless entry, interior lighting with illuminated entry and theater-style dimming, front sport bucket seats with an uplevel seat design and seat-back pockets.

This standard package also includes front reading and courtesy lamps.

For those who prefer an even more upscale look to their vehicle, Grand Am SE2 offers the Solid Value Appearance Package, which features leather-appointed seating, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-wrapped shift knob and leather-wrapped parking brake. Also included in this available package is a power sunroof, a Monsoon sound system with eight speakers, cassette and CD player, and 16-inch chrome tech wheels. For greater convenience, steering wheel-mounted audio controls are included as standard equipment on Grand Am SE2.

The 2003 Grand Am also offers XM Satellite Radio as an option on all models except the base SE. XM radio features 100 coast-to-coast digital channels, including 71 music channels (more than 30 of them commercial-free) from hip-hop to opera, classical to country, bluegrass to blues and 29 channels of sports, talk, children's and entertainment programming. XM also brings to the car, for the first time on radio, a diverse selection of 24-hour news sources previously available only in the home. XM's next-generation, sound-quality technology provides superior sound remarkably close to compact disc.

Powerplants
Grand Am will continue to offer a choice of two powerplants: the responsive and efficient Ecotec 2.2L L4 and the proven and powerful 3.4L V6.

Grand Am's Ecotec 2.2L inline four delivers excellent performance (140 horsepower at 5600 rpm) without sacrificing smooth, unobtrusive operation. Its twin balance shafts, all-aluminum construction and outstanding structural rigidity mean first-rate noise, vibration and harshness control. The Ecotec was designed for minimal maintenance and features an innovative paper-only oil filter cartridge for easy replacement and disposal. A hydraulic tensioner keeps the timing chain adjusted for life, and extended-life spark plugs deliver 100,000 miles of service. The DOHC, 16-valve base powerplant delivers performance, efficiency, low maintenance and smooth operation, with technology familiar in premium V-configured engines, including all-aluminum construction and hydraulic roller-finger valve operation.

Grand Am's other engine choices offer even more power. The 3400 V6 engine that's standard on SE2 (optional in other SE editions) delivers 170 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 195 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Grand Am GTs up the ante with a standard Ram Air version of the same engine equipped with cold-air induction and lower-restriction exhaust. These enhancements boost output to 175 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 205 lb-ft (278 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm.

All Grand Ams have 5-mph bumpers, air-conditioning, tilt steering wheel, programmable door locks with lockout protection, battery rundown protection, an electric remote trunk release, an oil life monitor, the PASSLock II theft deterrent, a sealed-for-life transmission and illuminated entry with theater dimming.

Grand Am also has a world-class body structure designed with advanced computer-aided techniques to optimize stiffness while minimizing weight. Grand Am's 25 Hz body rigidity sets a standard for the compact class.

A four-wheel independent suspension builds on the foundation. Aluminum suspension knuckles reduce unsprung weight for responsive ride and handling. Torque-axis powertrain mounting uses two mounts to support the mass of the engine and transaxle and two others specifically tuned to resist torque and damp idle vibrations. Mounting Grand Am's power rack-and-pinion steering system directly to the hydroformed chassis cradle provides precise on-center feel with excellent isolation of road disturbances.

Grand Am features three new colors for 2003: Summit White, Victory Red and Graystone Metallic, the latter available exclusively on SE models.

Grand Am is Pontiac's best-selling vehicle, consistently ranked as one of the top 10 selling automobiles as a result of its combination of bold athletic design, spirited driving performance and all-around responsive driving experience.
