2003 SAAB 9-5: MIDSIZE LUXURY WITH A HIGHLY RESPONSIVE TURBOCHARGED RIDE
Saab unveiled the new 9-5 in 2002 wîth model designations, or 'forms,' that give customers three distinct vehicle personalities to choose from: Linear, Arc and Aero. Each form is matched wîth unique interior trim, upholstery, wheel package and powertrain.Linear embodies elegant Swedish design and features the 2.3L, four-cylinder 185- horsepower light-pressure turbo. Arc is designed to emphasize a sports touring role, wîth ventilated leather seats, additional comfort features and a 200-horsepower 3.0L asymmetrically turbocharged V6 engine. Aero is the ultimate performance derivative, wîth bolstered sport seats, 17-inch wheels, sport-tuned chassis and the 2.3L, High-Output Turbo (HOT) engine.
For 2003, the 9-5 offers several new features that emphasize its responsive performance. The electronic stability program (ESP) is now standard on all 9-5s. Also, to complement the five-speed automatic transmission, the new Sentronic system allows manual selection of the gears wîth §teering-wheel-mounted controls. Other highlights for 2003 include Homelink garage door opener, optional sport ventilated seats on Aero, and two new exterior colors: Graphite Green and Merlot Red.
Electronic Stability Program The Saab 9-5 offers an Electronic Stability Program (ESP) standard all models. ESP was an option on the Linear during the 2002 model year.
Extra sensors on the traction-control and antilock-braking systems provide a highly sophisticated stability function. ESP gives a sharp edge to the latest Saab's sports performance dynamics, while providing the driver wîth a greater degree of vehicle control.
Saab engineers have tested the system extensively - in typical Saab fashion - by taking the proprietary Bosch hardware and then re-engineering the software to accommodate Saab's own specific preferences. The system was benchmarked against rival carmakers' systems. The result is one of the most sophisticated and intelligent ESP systems on the market, one that's capable of reading even minute differences in surface grip.
Saab's ESP assists the driver in the direction of his or her §teering efforts. If the driver goes into a corner in which there is less grip, resulting in an over§teering slide, the ESP system applies brake force to the outer wheels to nullify the yaw rate of the car and gently bring the car back into line. In that way, it totally complements the driver at the wheel, rather than aggressively offering help only at the last available moment, the way some systems do. The new Saab ESP system also works when a slippery road causes the car to understeer - when the nose of the car starts to push wide instead of following its intended course. ESP offers just enough brake-force control to help bring the car back into line, whereas too much assistance might suddenly switch the car from an understeer to an oversteer situation.
Sentronic: Manual shift for automatic transmission
The new Sentronic system allows manual selection of the gears through §teering wheel mounted controls, for the five-speed automatic transmission, which monitors performance and adapts to prevailing driving conditions.
To activate the Sentronic mode, drivers need only move the gear lever to the manual (M) position and then use the controls on the §teering wheel for gearshifting. The (+) is for upshift and the (-) for downshift. The Sentronic mode is deactivated when the gear lever is moved from the manual position. The five-speed automatic, added in 2002, makes effortless use of the turbo power, crisply picking up the appropriate power points, while giving all automatic models sportier and smoother performance, taking advantage of the Saab's mid-range 'turbo rush' that characterize the Saab powerplants.
The gearbox is capable of handling the Aero's high 258 lb-ft of torque. Also, the automatic constantly monitors its surroundings, adapting performance and shift points to prevailing conditions. It can sense a high-altitude environment, for example, or detect a towing load and respond accordingly. The driver has control of the automatic driving modes, wîth the choice of normal, sport, winter or the new manual mode.Source - Saab
A company that began manufacturing automobiles in 1949, Saab, originally known as Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget (Svenska Aircraft Company), was a Swedish company that early on focused on aerodynamics.
Introduced in 1997, the four-door Saab 9-5 was an executive vehicle that was produced as the replacement to the Saab 9000. Representing a huge leap for Saab, the 9-5 was introduced in the spring of 1998 for the 1999 model year. The Saab 9-5 was available with either a four-cylinder or V-6 engines, both turbocharged.
Available in both sedan and station wagon body styles, the 9-5 sedan had a drag coefficient of 0.29, while the station wagon was 0.31. To make loading easier, the 9-5 introduced amazing innovation such as tracks to secure cargo down along with a sliding load floor. Advertised as the Saab 9-5, the car was originally badged as a 95. It's important that this model not be confused with the Saab 95 that was produced from 1959 through 1978.
Powered by Saabs B205 and B235 straight-4 engines, the 9-5 was also powered by Alfa Romeo's 1.9 JTD 1V diesel straight-4 engine in Europe. From 1999 to 2003 a version of the GM 54_ V6 powered by a unique asymmetrical low-pressure turbocharger was made available. Only available with an automatic transmission, this engine, and cars with this engine installed were recognizable by their twin tailpipes. This feature was only available on Arc, Griffin and SE models.
The V6 engine was replaced by a high-pressure turbo straight-4 engine that was capable of producing 200HP in 2004. This engine was able to produce 260HP even in the non-Aero model by 2008.
Winning technology and safety awards in Australia, the U.K. and Denmark, the 9-5 continued with Saab's long-standing tradition of offering class leading safety features and the new availability of ventilated seats with active headrests that moved forward to prevent whiplash when the vehicle was hit from the rear. The ‘Night Panel' was also an inventive feature that permits dousing of the lighting from the instrument panel, which aided in lessening the distraction while driving at night.
Originally the public was told that the new 9-5 would be unveiled at the end of 2008, but recent reports have suggested that the current 9-5 will be replaced in 2009 for the 2010 model year. Most likely to be constructed in Ruesselsheim, Germany at the Opel plant, the new model will be based on GM's Epsilon 2 platform, shared with the next generation 9-3.
In various parts of its native country, Sweden, the Saab 9-5 was used for patrol and undercover police work. In Aspen, Colorado, the City has been utilizing Saabs as patrol vehicles from the early 1970's until 2005 before it was discontinued in favor of the Volvo XC90. Since 1980 the town of Vail, Colorado has been using Saabs until 2005 when the black Saab 9-5 was replaced by Ford Explorers due to budget cuts.By Jessica Donaldson
