Overview
F-Series has been America's best-selling truck for 25 years.
For 2003, the Ford F-150 is quieter and more refined thanks to a 75-part noise, vibration and harshness upgrade. Two feature vehicles now offer new appeal for both entry-level buyers and those seeking an exclusive look.
Ford F-150 continues to deliver power and durability in the most comprehensive lineup of full-size pickups in the industry, meeting a wide variety of needs for work and personal use.
F-150 is manufactured in Kansas, City, Missouri; Norfolk, Virginia; and Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
Design
Cab configurations include Regular Cab and SuperCab, in both Styleside and Flareside versions, as well as the SuperCrew.
The F-150 SuperCrew, first sold as a 2001 model, is the newest result of Ford's truck innovation. It offers four full-size doors and a full rear seat for added comfort and cargo-carrying versatility. The King Ranch package is available on SuperCrew and SuperCab.
The supercharged Harley-Davidson F-150 SuperCrew offers 340 horsepower, leather-trimmed seating with the convenience of four doors and exclusive badging and paint.
F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCab buyers can choose short- and long-wheelbase models and 6.5- or 8-foot pickup box lengths. SuperCrew is available with a single wheelbase and 5.5-foot box. All models are available with 4x2 or 4x4 drive systems.
Three trim series are available on Regular Cab and SuperCab models XL, XLT and Lariat. The F-150 SuperCrew is offered on XLT and Lariat.
Interior
The F-150 SuperCrew offers many first- or best-in-class features, including standard power adjustable pedals, available power moonroof and a functional bed extender, which increases box length for carrying longer items. SuperCrew has an available rear-seat entertainment package option, with VHS player and video game outlets.
Available features include air conditioning, an overhead console, power windows with delayed accessory power and one-touch down driver's window, power locks, tilt steering wheel, speed control and power moonroof. Electronic automatic temperature control is standard on the SuperCrew, Lariat and King Ranch.
Tie-down hooks are located in each corner of all F-150 cargo boxes to help secure cargo. A cargo light on the back of the cab makes loading and unloading the pickup box easier at night.
The rear step bumper provides easier access to the cargo area. The tailgate can be removed for special loading applications, and on XLT and Lariat, the tailgate can be locked.
Powertrains
F-150's standard Regular Cab and SuperCab 4.2-liter OHV V-6 engine produces 202 horsepower and 252 foot-pounds of torque. It features a split-port induction system that optimizes fuel efficiency and engine response.
The 4.6-liter SOHC Triton V-8, which is standard with F-150 SuperCrew and optional with Regular Cab and SuperCab models, delivers 231 horsepower and 293 foot-pounds of torque. The single overhead cam (SOHC) design features one camshaft in each cylinder head, providing excellent valve control for dependable power and responsive performance.
All models offer an optional 5.4-liter SOHC Triton V-8 engine that puts out 260 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque. In January 2002, this engine was named one of Ward's Auto World magazine's 'Ten Best Engines' for the sixth year in a row. This engine features more torque than comparable engines from its full-size pickup truck competitors. Also, peak torque arrives at a lower rpm than the competition.
F-150's five-speed manual overdrive transmission, standard on Regular Cab and SuperCab models, has an overdrive fifth gear to reduce engine rpm at highway speeds, which contributes to fuel economy and quieter operation.
A 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, optional on Regular Cab and SuperCab models but standard on the F-150 SuperCrew, provides high output of low-end torque for excellent start-up performance.
F-150's towing and payload ratings can be enhanced with optional packages. The Class III Towing Group includes a seven-pin trailer wiring harness, frame-mounted hitch receiver, heavy-duty electrical/cooling package and heavy-duty shock absorbers.
The 7700 Payload (Group A) upgrades the GVWR to 7,700 pounds and provides a front Gross Axle Weight Rating on all 4x4 models of 4,150 pounds to accommodate a snowplow (7700 package and snowplow are not available on SuperCrew). A 4.10:1 axle ratio is available with the 7700 package (Group B), which allows for a 15,000-pound Gross Combined Weight Rating on the 4x2 model.
Ride and Handling
A four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) is standard on all F-150 models. The short- and long-arm independent front suspension enhances ride and handling, while staggered rear shocks on SuperCrew help control movement of the rear axle on bumpy roads.
Safety and Security
Child safety seat tether anchors enable parents to more securely install front-facing child-safety seats. A driver and right front passenger air bag supplemental restraint system is included for front occupant protection. Side door intrusion beams help protect occupants in a side impact. LATCH child safety seat tethers are standard equipment.
BeltMinder system encourages safety belt use. It is particularly valuable in a pickup, which is often used for frequent short trips. Remote keyless entry offers added convenience and security at night by activating the interior lights. The SecuriLockT passive anti-theft system helps prevent vehicle theft. It is automatically armed when the ignition is turned off and will not allow the engine to start without the proper ignition key. Its specially coded chip communicates with the vehicle's ignition system and has 72 quadrillion possible codes.
