Dodge Avenger Proves Life Is an Adventure

The design thesis: merge European rally car performance and style wîth some of the convenience and capability of the American sport-utility vehicle.

The result: the Dodge Avenger concept.

The Adrenaline Red Pearl-colored Avenger, unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, gives American drivers the rally car style and performance usually seen only in video games. This high-tech passion and performance is packaged in a real-life vehicle that is robust and capable enough to get occupants into their own adventures far removed from the video screen.

Although based on the European rally coupe formula, the Dodge Avenger has four doors, consistent wîth the 'do more' philosophy of the Dodge brand. Visually, Avenger stands out wîth taut lines that track around precise, robust surfaces and accentuate the protective quality of the overall design. Its body nestles between muscular, rally-inspired fenders, providing a capable, powerful stance. Performance and street smarts combine to give Avenger the agility and size of a passenger car - but wîth the strength and stance more associated wîth the SÚV market.

Dodge Avenger has a wide track, full fenders and a unique fastback profile to showcase its agile all-wheel drive capability. The rear doors open 90 degrees for better ingress and egress and allow for both occupants and items, such as skis, a mountain bike or just groceries. At the rear, a hatch-style liftgate enables a level of versatility for any owner to indulge his or her active lifestyle.

Features accentuating the vehicle's style include a satin silver mirror ring to silver exhaust tips, black head lamp bezels including perforated faces, and silver head lamp cans wîth amber LEDs which permeate through. The styling is purposely sparse as a true rally-inspired car but detailed in silver and black accents to provide a clean yet punctuated setting.

Four independent seats hug the occupants in a protective exo-skeleton structure featuring four-point built-in safety belts that resemble racing harnesses. A center console area features armrests for comfort, but maintains utility wîth see-through storage bins. The active, outgoing image of Dodge is further highlighted through the integrated 'boom box' in the lift gate.

Avenger's all-wheel-drive powertrain consists of a 3.5-liter V6 and an A604 automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) Gears are changed not wîth a standard stick shifter, but wîth §teering wheel-mounted paddles to enable quick, direct and smooth transitions and response.

Based on the platform of the Mitsubishi Galant the Dodge Avenger was produced from1995 through 2000. A two-door sports coupe, the Avenger easily fits up to four passengers with ease, yet is still sleek and powerful enough to attract sporty drivers.

The Avenger was available in both base and ES trim models and originally was available in two different engine size an transmission types, the four-cylinder 5-speed base model and the V6 automatic ES. The V6 eventually became standard on all trim models, but was only available as an automatic. The original Avenger featured 103in wheelbase. The V6 engine was only available with the A604 transmission and could not be swapped out easily due to a lack of transmission capable of fitting around the front axle.

Born out of a partnership between Chrysler and Mitsubishi, the Dodge Avenger featured an exciting style and a spacious cabin. The Avenger was built by Diamon Star Motors, along with the similar Chrysler Sebring coupe on a stretched Mitsubishi Galant platform

The Avenger was discontinued in 2000 and Dodge's newest coupe was renamed the Stratus Coupe.

In 2008 the Dodge Avenger name resurfaced as an athletically designed 4-door sedan that became the successor to the Dodge Stratus. Sharing its platform with the Chrysler Sebring the '08 Dodge Avenger featured 3 engines, a fuel efficient, relatively weak 2.4 liter 4-cylinder capable of 173 horsepower, the mid range offering 189 horsepower 2.7 liter V6 and a 3.5 liter V6 powerhouse that delivered 235 horsepower. The 2.4 liter 4-cylinde engine sent horsepower to the front wheel via a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.7 liter V6 was more refined than the noisy 4-cylinder. The 3.5 liter V6 was available with front or all wheel drive.

The 4-cylinder Avenger SE features power windows, mirrors, door locks, AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary audio jack, AC and cruise control. The Avenger SXT features 17-inch alloy wheels, and anti-lock brakes. The Avenger R/T featured 18-inch wheels, 4-wheel disc bakes, a sport tuned suspension system, 6 disc CD/DVD changer and automatic climate control. The R/T came standard with traction and stability control.

Basically a 5-passenger sedan, the 2008 Dodge Avenger is one of the many sport themed midsize sedans in the market today. The Avenger will replace the outdated and aging Stratus sedan and along with the redesigned Sebring will use a shared DaimlerChrysler/Mitsubishi Motors platform called the GS. The GS platform will be stretched in size and known as the JS.
