AURORA, OLDSMOBILE'S FLAGSHIP MODEL, RETURNS TO ITS V8 HERITAGE

2003 Oldsmobile Aurora
Aurora, Oldsmobile's flagship model, has represented innovation and change for the division since it debuted in 1994. The 2003 Aurora continues to exhibit powertrain leadership, exclusively offering a V8 engine, just like the original. Two new colors, Bordeaux Red and Steel Blue, will be available in 2003. 'The V8 is precisely the right engine for Aurora,' said John Gatt, Aurora marketing director. 'The V8 provides customers well-rounded performance, impeccable durability and reliability, and smooth, quiet operation.'

Aurora's elegance, sophistication, and superior road manners provide luxury and refinement. This will be the final model year for Aurora, a model that opened a new chapter in Oldsmobile's engineering history.

2003 Oldsmobile AuroraHistory of the Aurora V8
In 1992, Oldsmobile announced the all-new Aurora V8 - a state-of-the-art vehicle designed to reclaim Oldsmobile's position of leadership in powertrain technology. Two years before the production version of the Aurora arrived, the Aurora V8 earned a place in the record book when a slightly modified production version of the engine broke 47 speed and endurance records in Fort Stockton, Texas. Since then, a motorsports version of the Aurora V8 went on to compete in International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) endurance racing, sweeping IMSA titles in its rookie season.

Oldsmobile's successful motorsports program took another step forward in 1996, when Oldsmobile committed to produce a racing version of the Aurora V8 engine for the Indy Racing League (IRL). The Aurora V8 has had much success in the IRL, winning several Indianapolis 500 races and other IRL championships.

Aurora V8 engine
The 4.0L V8 was completely redesigned for better fuel economy, improved sound quality and lower emissions in 2001. It produces 250 hp at 5600 rpm and torque tops out at 260 lb-ft at 4400 rpm, with 90 percent of peak torque on the ground between 2300 and 5600 rpm.

Precision Control System
The Precision Control System helps drivers prevent loss of control when encountering an unexpected road hazard. This system enhances safety by working with Aurora's inherently balanced performance, monitoring steering angle, turning rate and lateral acceleration, then braking when needed to help the driver stay on course. When cornering on a slippery road, for instance, PCS can selectively apply either of the two front brakes to counteract a front- or rear-end slide. PCS is also helpful when sudden steering is required to avoid an obstacle. The ABS system, the traction control system, and the responsive steering and suspension combine to aid the driver in avoiding collisions. Aurora also features dual front air bags and driver and front passenger side-impact air bags.

Aurora V8 Collector Edition
Oldsmobile will produce an Aurora V8 Collector Edition. The last 500 vehicles that roll off the line in mid-2003 will come equipped with distinct embroidery, wheels, ornamentation, color, and badging, along with a special Collector Edition certificate for the owner.
