The Curved Dash Olds was the first mass-produced automobile. It was also the first car produced to bear the name Oldsmobile. From 1901 to 1904, the Curved Dash Olds was the best selling car in the world. Slow, but tough, the olds could cover the countryside, regardless of the condition (or existence) of the road. With its toboggan-like dash, this car had a 'horse-wanted look', waiting for the horse to be hitched up. The tiller, used to steer the auto, was set for right hand drive and the engine was located under the passenger compartment.
The prominence place of the Curved Dash Olds in automotive history made it a popular model to replicate. The first replicas were made in the 1950's, and they were a common way to have an 'old' car without many of the problems that came with vintage machines. In the late 1960's, Vintage Reproduction began making replicas of several popular models in 7/8 scale. The company made several models including a Ford Runabout, a Cadillac and three Oldsmobile models including a Surrey, Kohler, a company that continues to make engines for lawn and garden vehicles and Go-Karts, made the single cylinder engine located under the front seat. The replica is driven engine by a chain, as was the original. The wheels are bike tires with heavy-duty spokes, and the body is marine grade plywood with polyurethane enamel paint. The tiller is located in the center of the front seta since the cars were designed to carry one person in each seat. These smaller models gained popularity as parade vehicles, and continued to be utilized to raise money at church and booster club fundraisers.
