1982 Ford Mustang

1982 was a big year for the Mustang as it saw the return of the 302 cubic-inch (5.0-liter) V8 engine. Buyers could purchase the high-output 302 with four-speed manual overdrive transmission which had last been offered in 1979. The 1982 302 V8 featured a two-barrel carburetor (345 CFM), larger-diameter (free-flowing) exhaust system, and low-restriction air cleaner with dual inlets.

The base engine was the 2.3-liter four-cylinder unit with overhead cams, 9.0:1 compression, five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, a two-barrel Motorcraft of Holley carburetor, and 86 horsepower at 4,600 RPM and 117 ft-lb of torque. A 200 cubic-inch six, 255 cubic-inch V8, and 302 CID V8 were also available as optional equipment. They had hydraulic valve lifters, overhead valves, and a two-barrel carburetor. The 200 CID six produced 87 horsepower at 3,800 RPM and 154 lb-ft of torque, the 255 CID V8 produced 120 hp at 3,400 RPM and 205 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 RPM, and the 302 CID (5.0 liter) V8 produced 157 hp at 4,200 RPM and 240 lb-ft at 2,400 RPM. Automatic gearboxes had a lockup torque converter on all three gears.

The line-up for the 1982 Mustang included the L, GL, and GLX. A GT option was also available and replaced the former Cobra option. The base model was the L and came equipped with full wheel covers, AM radio, and wraparound bodyside moldings. Seatbelts with tension relievers, a remote-control left-hand mirror, flash-to-pass head-lamp feature, and a new screw-on gas cap were also standard.

The Mustang GTs rode on P185/75R14 blackwall steel-belted radials on cast-aluminum wheels, had dual black remote mirrors, built-in fog lamps, and a handling suspension. Body style features included a three-slot grille, color-keyed rear spoiler, body-color cowl grille, and body-colored front fascia. On the liftgate was the 'GT' identification.

Equipment included a Traction-Lok differential, power steering, power brakes, and a console with a digital clock and diagnostic warning module.

Buyers could also purchase the optional TR performance package which would enhance the Mustangs handling qualities.

The 'L' Notchback was priced at $6,345 with the four-cylinder engine and $7,060 with the with 3.3-liter six. The GL Notchback listed at $6,845, the GL Hatchback at $6,980, the GLX Notchback at $6,980, and the GLX Hatchback at $7,100. The addition of the 3.3-liter six boosted the base price by approximately $625. The Mustang GT, available solely with the V8, was priced at $8,300.

Ford produced 69,348 examples of the GL Hatchback, 45,316 of the 'L' Notchback, 9,926 of the GLX hatchabck, and 5,828 of the GLX Notchback.
