1973 MG B

The MG B was conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962 and manufactured and marketed until 1980 by the British Motor Corporation (BMW). It replaced the MGA which had been in production since 1955 with most of the 101,081 examples having been exported.

Instead of the traditional body-on-frame construction used on the MGA and preceding MG T-Types, the MGB used a unitary structure that reduced weight and increased structural rigidity and strength. Some of the MGA components continued to the MGB, including the transmission, suspension, and brakes. The engine was a 1,798cc B-Series unit with three bearings and 95 horsepower. In October of 1964, it received an update to a five-bearing crankshaft. In 1975, the engine was de-tuned for the United States market in order to comply with emission standards, and rubber bumpers were installed to meet bumper standards.

The transmission, through 1967, was a four-speed manual unit with a non-synchromesh, straight-cut first gear. It was based on the one used in the MGA but with minor upgrades to cope with the larger engine of the MGB. Overdrive was available as optional equipment. In 1968, a full synchromesh gearbox based on the one in the MGC became available and was designed to handle the three-liter engine powering the MGC, and thus, was more than capable of handling the standard B-Series engine.

The soft-top roadster was joined by the MGB GT three-door 2+2 coupe in 1965 and produced alongside the six-cylinder MGC from 1967 to 1969, and the eight-cylinder 2+2 MGB GT Coupe from 1973 through 1976.

The 1973 MGB Roadster had a base price of $3,320 and the MGB GT 2+2 Coupe listed for $3,615. The 1,798cc, overhead-valve four-cylinder engine had a cast-iron block and head, solid valve lifters, five main bearings, and two SU semi-downdraft carburetors. It was modified to run on both low-lead or regular fuel.

The interiors received a restyled instrument panel, a locking glove box, armrests, and a new center console in 1962. Exterior changes included a slightly revised grille, with the emblem being relocated to the upper grille molding. the transmission was an all-synchro four-speed manual and steering was handled by a rack-and-pinion unit. Options included rubber floor mats, whitewall tires, AM/FM radio, heater, removable hardtop (roadster), and an electrically-heated rear window on the GT.
