2004 PONTIAC GRAND AM - A PERFORMANCE GEM IN A VERSATILE PACKAGE

2004 Pontiac Grand Am
Grand Am's success can be traced to its athletic design, responsive handling, fully independent suspension and driver-oriented interior. For 2004, Pontiac's best-selling model just gets better, building on its heritage as a driver's car. All models ride on a hydroformed chassis, have rack-and-pinion steering and performance tuned suspensions. 2004 Pontiac Grand Am
Grand Am design
The 2004 Grand Am models feature contemporary exterior designs to increase the vehicle's appeal to younger buyers. The bodyside is clean with lines that flow gracefully through the air and wheels that fill up the fender wells, giving Grand Am the appearance of being lower to the ground. At the rear, the Grand Am's taillights and rear cornering lamps are integrated into the bumper corners for enhanced visibility. The front end, with its familiar split Pontiac grille, settles down to a gentle wedge, cutting the air and creating down force at highway speeds. And everything about the sleek design says it hardly disturbs the air at speed. The result is a clean, refined appearance.

2004 Pontiac Grand Am
All Grand Am models for 2004 have 5-mph bumpers, air-conditioning, tilt steering wheel, programmable door locks with lockout protection, battery rundown protection, an electric remote trunk release, an oil life monitor, the PASSLock II theft deterrent and a sealed-for-life transmission. 2004 Pontiac Grand AmSE series sedans
For 2004, Grand Am offers its SE customers a trio of vehicles that are fully equipped for fun and value: the SE, SE1 and SE2 sedans.

Standard equipment on the SE base model includes four-wheel independent suspension, an Ecotec 2.2L 140 horsepower (104 kw) I-4 engine, AM/FM stereo with CD player, driver and front-passenger air bags, tilt-wheel steering column and PASSLock theft-deterrent system. It provides value far above most competitors' base models.

The SE1 sedan adds more standard features with power windows and a driver's express-down feature, 15-inch five-spoke cast aluminum wheels and four-way adjustable driver's seat with power height adjustment. Both the SE and SE1 models come with the Ecotec 2.2L as standard equipment, but the SE1 offers an available 170-horsepower (127-kw) 3400 V-6 engine for effortless acceleration and ample power for almost any situation.

The 2004 Grand Am SE2 is designed to appeal to compact sedan customers who prefer a well-equipped vehicle. The SE2 also comes with standard anti-lock brakes, Enhanced Traction System (ETS), cruise control, AM/FM stereo with CD Radio Data System and graphic equalizer, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated radio controls. Also standard are programmable power door locks, full instrumentation and a remote keyless entry system.

GT and SC/T models
The Grand Am GT and GT1 models are for people who prefer a fast-paced lifestyle. A 175-horsepower (130-kw) version of the 3.4L 3400 V-6, providing 205 lb.-ft. (278 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm, is standard on these hot coupes and sedans. The engine provides plenty of torque off the line and equally great performance on the open road.

GT styling is marked by a clean, Coke bottle-like profile and a smooth rear deck, and unique front and rear treatments. The GT's interior provides a full array of instrumentation and bucket seats that provide strong lateral support during hard cornering maneuvers. All GT models come standard with a Monsoon speaker system for awesome sound and speed-rated blackwall P225/50R16 tires and aluminum wheels for maximum grip. GT1 models additionally sport a sunroof and steering wheel-mounted audio controls as standard equipment.

And, for the ultimate 'pocket rocket' look, the highly popular SC/T performance appearance package returns on Grand Am GT models in 2004. This available package consists of a composite performance hood and aero wing spoiler - turning the GT into the ultimate 'factory tuner.'

2004 Pontiac Grand AmEngine and suspension
Grand Am will continue to offer a choice of two powerplants: the responsive and efficient Ecotec 2.2L I-4 and the proven, powerful 3.4L V-6.

Grand Am's Ecotec engine delivers excellent performance (140 hp/104 kw at 5600 rpm) without sacrificing smooth, unobtrusive operation. Its twin balance shafts, all-aluminum construction and outstanding structural rigidity mean first-rate noise, vibration and harshness control. The Ecotec was designed for minimal maintenance and features an innovative paper-only oil filter cartridge for easy replacement and disposal. A hydraulic tensioner keeps the timing chain adjusted for life, and extended-life spark plugs deliver 100,000 miles of service. The DOHC, 16-valve base powerplant delivers performance, efficiency, low maintenance and smooth operation. The Ecotec 2.2L I-4 is standard in the SE and SE1 models.

The 3400 V-6, standard on SE2 and optional on the SE1, delivers 170 hp (127 kw) at 4800 rpm and 200 lb.-ft. (271 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm. Grand Am GT models come with a standard Ram Air version of 3400 with cold-air induction and lower-restriction exhaust. These enhancements boost output to 175 hp (130 kw) at 4800 rpm and 205 lb.-ft. (278 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm.

Grand Am also has a world-class body structure designed with advanced computer-aided techniques to optimize stiffness while minimizing weight. Grand Am's 25 Hz body rigidity sets a standard for the compact class.

A four-wheel independent suspension builds on the foundation. Aluminum suspension knuckles reduce unsprung weight for responsive ride and handling. Torque-axis powertrain mounting uses two mounts to support the mass of the engine and transaxle and two others specifically tuned to resist torque and reduce vibrations while idling. Mounting Grand Am's power rack-and-pinion steering system directly to the hydroformed chassis cradle provides precise on-center feel with excellent isolation of road disturbances.

Safety
With sophisticated engine management and computer programming, Grand Am's available ABS and Enhanced Traction System help provide solid stops, traction and control under the most challenging conditions. The ABS system can help the driver maintain control under situations that could normally send a vehicle out of control.

Grand Am also provides the PASSLock theft-deterrent system on all models to disable the vehicle's fuel system if the proper key is not used.

Driver and right front passenger air bags, three-point safety belts for all outboard positions, manual lap safety belts for center seating positions, and automatic power door locks are also standard safety features on all Grand Am models.

The 2004 Grand Am also offers XM Satellite Radio (continental Ú.S. only) as an option on all models except the base SE. XM Satellite Radio provides 100 coast-to-coast, digital-quality channels of original music, news, sports and talk. Consumers can subscribe to the basic service for $9.99 a month - less than the cost of a single CD. In addition, GM customers with GMAC financing can choose to include the XM subscription in their car payments.

In the Ú.S., Grand Am is Pontiac's bestseller and GM's compact sales leader.
