The Elva Company was founded in 1955 by Frank Nichols in Bexhill, Surrey with the name derived from the French phrase 'elle va' meaning 'she goes.' Early drivers of Elva automobiles included Stuart Lewis Evans and Archie Scott Brown, but they found it hard to compete against 'works' teams such as Lotus in Europe, so they turned their attention to America where the SCCA provided a much more level playing field. The MK 7, however, was successful on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Elva MK7 represents one of the few instances where the German Porsche Company supplied engines to another manufacturer, and a Porsche-powered Elva MK7 took a debut victory at the Road Atlanta race in 1963. In Europe, Herbert Muller drove a Mk 7 to 2nd place in the European Hill Climb Championship and Tony Lanfranchi regularly beat the Brabham BT8s and Lotus 23s en route to the 1964 Autosport Championship.

The Elva MK7 was designed to house various engines, including the Lotus TwinCam 1600cc engine backed by a Hewland five-speed gearbox. The MK8 that followed was often fitted with the 1.8-liter BMW engines and some with 1.5-liter Holbay-Ford engines. The MK7 and MK8 were similar, although the MK8 had a wider track and a longer wheelbase than the MK7.
