1941 Packard One-Ten

Packard survived the devastating Depression, maintained its stature as one of America's leading luxury-car makers, and enjoyed record-breaking sales in 1940. The company's survival must be attributed to its less expensive 'junior' model launched in 1935 called the Packard One Twenty and the Packard 'Six' introduced two years later. The design of the Six was similar to the larger eight-cylinder 120 but was priced less than $200 above a comparably-equipped Ford, with prices that began at $795 and rose to over $1,295. Packard's prestige and exclusivity were carried by the Twelve with prices that ranged from $3,490 to nearly $6,000. The One Twenty was priced in the low-to-mid $1,000s and the Super Eight mostly occupied the low-$2000 to mid-$3,000 range.

The attractive styling, diverse price points, and a legacy of luxury and craftsmanship were instrumental in the company's continued survival during the lean years of the Great Depression.

The entry-level pricing for the Packard moved upward slightly with the introduction of the six-cylinder One-Ten (110). In the front were two tall slanted side grilles positioned in between the sealed beam headlights that rested directly on the fenders. The parking lights were mounted on the crown of the fenders. The L-head inline six had four main bearings, a Stromberg carburetor, a cast-iron block, and delivered 100 horsepower. The transmission was a three-speed selective synchromesh unit with overdrive now a Warner Gear. Braking power was supplied by hydraulic drums at all four corners.

The Packard One-Ten was very popular with over 62,000 examples produced in its inaugural year. Body styles included a business coupe, club coupe, convertible coupe, eight-passenger station wagon (Packard's first production station wagon was offered in mid-1937), and a two- and four-door touring sedan. The popularity of the One-Ten prompted Packard to offer a wider range of its six-cylinder models for 1941, including a newly available deluxe trim level.

Packard's Nineteenth Series was introduced on September 16th of 1940, with subtly updated styling and minor revisions to the basic body design. The interior received a more ergonomically designed plastic dash in various colors to match the interior. The 122-inch wheelbase of the One-Ten was joined by a larger 133-inch platform as Packard entered the lucrative taxicab business. Prices began with the business coupe, listed at nearly $930, and rose to over $1,250 for the eight-passenger wagon. The club coupe listed at $1,020, the two-door touring sedan at $1,010, the sedan at $1075, and the convertible coupe at $1,200. The Deluxe line included the club coupe priced at $1,060, the two-door touring sedan at $1,070, the four-door touring sedan at $1,140, the convertible coupe at $1,230, and the range-topping station wagon at $1,330.

For 1941, Hercules supplied 358 station wagon bodies to Packard for One Ten and One Twenty chassis, both of which could be had in standard or Deluxe trim.

The engine continued to be the 245 cubic-inch, L-head, inline-6 offering 100 horsepower and backed by a three-speed selective synchromesh transmission. A new semi-automatic clutch, called the 'Electromatic,' were among the mechanical updates for 1941, and the overdrive system was now called Aero-Drive.

The shortened hood louvers doubled as hood releases, and the running boards were now optional equipment, as were two-tone paint schemes, joining the spotlight, air conditioning, radio, and heater.

The One-Ten remained the most popular (and affordable) model in the Packard lineup, with 34,700 examples sold.

Above the One-Ten for 1941 was the One-Twenty offered in eight body styles with prices that ranged from $1,140 to $1,540. Its 282 cubic-inch straight-eight offered 120 horsepower and its wheelbase measured 127 inches. The Clipper touring sedan was priced at $1,420 and used the One-Twenty's engine but with a new compression ratio that boosted output by five horsepower. Its wheelbase measured 127 inches, just like the One-Twenty and the smallest Super-8, though its chassis was redesigned and its width made it one of the widest cars on the road, and one of the lowest. The wide and low styling was unique and soon would be applied to many Packard models for the proceeding year.

The Super-8 One-Sixty occupied the mid-$1,000 to low-$2,000 range, rested on a 127-, 138-, and 148-inch wheelbase, and was powered by a 356 CID straight-8 with 160 horsepower. Pricing on the Super-8 One-Eighty began at $2,630 and rose to $5,600 - used the same wheelbases as its Super-8 One Sixty sibling, and its 356 CID straight-8 produced the same 160 hp. The differences between the One-Sixty and One-Eighty were in the level of trim and number of standard accouterments. Packard further distinguished the two by describing the One-Eighty as a custom car available on special order, and 6 of the 11 body styles were created by custom coachbuilders. They had larger windows that were hydraulically operated on closed-body styles.
