CADILLAC CTS INTRODUCES NEW MODEL WITH 2.8L ENGINE FOR 2005

The 2005 CTS builds on Cadillac's century-long tradition of technology and design innovation, and is a modern interpretation of the strikingly beautiful cars that made Cadillac famous. Built on GM's acclaimed Sigma rear-wheel-drive architecture, CTS was rigorously tested at the famed Nurburgring racetrack in Germany.

For 2005, CTS debuts a new entry-level model wîth a new 2.8L engine that makes 210 horsepower (156 kw) and 195 lb.-ft. of torque (265 Nm). The 2.8L V-6 VVT is a modified version of the 3.6L VVT CTS engine. Braking and suspension capabilities remain the same. The new model is intended to widen the CTS and Cadillac demographic base to include younger buyers. Production begins in October 2004. Both engines can be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission, and the 2.8L also is available wîth the five-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

The 2005 CTS also has a new instrument cluster, 16-inch painted wheels, 16-inch machined wheels, and three new exterior colors: Stealth Gray, Sand Storm and Moonstone.

2.8L V-6 VVT

As the second-produced variant of GM's new global V-6 engine family, the new 2.8L V-6 VVT was designed using the latest advanced engineering tools. It is an all-aluminum 60-degree dual overhead cam, four-valve-per-cylinder design developing 210 hp (156 kw) at 6500 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. (265 Nm) of torque at 3200 rpm. Consistent wîth the 60 degree V-6 design, the engine employs a wide range of advanced technologies, including fully variable valve timing of the intake and exhaust valves and a dual-stage variable intake manifold to deliver outstanding flexibility, fuel economy and emissions control. The 2.8L V-6 comes mated to a new six-speed manual transmission or the Hydra-Matic 5L40-E automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

3.6L V-6 VVT engine

The3.6L V-6 VVT debuted in the 2004 CTS, earning praise from consumers and media alike. For 2005, the 3.6L V-6 VVT comes standard wîth a six-speed manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

The 3.6L V-6 is an all-aluminum, 60-degree dual overhead cam, four-valves-per-cylinder design. Like the 2.8L V-6, it has fully variable valve timing and a dual-stage variable intake manifold. The 3.6L V-6 develops 255 horse power (190 kw) at 6200 rpm and 252 lb.-ft. (342 Nm) of torque at 3200 rpm.

Two transmissions

New for 2005, the CTS will be offered wîth an Aisin six-speed manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) Eagerly anticipated by performance enthusiasts, this is the first time the 3.6L V-6 VVT will be offered wîth a manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The 2.8L also is available wîth the six-speed manual.

The six-speed transmission is fully synchronized (including reverse), wîth a single overdrive. This allows for lower propshaft speeds and improved NVH. The transmission is rated for 400 Nm (295 horse power) and its unique architecture is such that the gear inertias are lower, resulting in significantly lower shift efforts compared to conventional RWD manual transmissions.

The compact, state-of-the-art 5L40-E automatic transmission features a full complement of advanced electronic control capabilities. These include a shift mode button that allows the driver to select between 'sport,' 'winter' and 'economy' modes. Another electronic feature is also a first for GM: engine braking in all five gears, giving the automatic the same sporty feel as a downshifting manual.

Dramatic design

The design team gave CTS a uniquely Cadillac look. Its lean, chiseled body features sheer forms, sharp edges and crisp intersecting lines that honor Cadillac's storied past and look to the future.

Conventional Cadillac cues, including the grille and exterior lighting, have been updated for the CTS. Cadillac's traditional vertical headlamps and taillamps first appeared in 1965, and CTS refines the tradition. CTS' integrated headlamps convey the high-tech image of optical instruments and high-end camera lenses. Thin and tall, they create more space for the large, louvered grille.

The interior provides all the amenities that luxury customers have come to expect, wîth the emphasis on comfort and convenience. It uses warm, rich materials to contrast wîth the cool, computer-like, high-tech cockpit appearance, balancing the contemporary feel wîth touches of traditional luxury. Wooden surfaces are used sparingly on the §teering wheel, shifter knob and door pulls.

New Sigma architecture

The CTS' Sigma architecture is the first usage of ultra high-strength steel at GM, and the first time the steel has been incorporated as a welded member of the structure. In the past, ultra high-strength steel was limited to applications such as bumpers, where bolts were used for attachment. Últra high-strength steel permits the use of thinner, lighter steel, which reduces mass yet still allows proper energy absorption and reduces intrusion into the passenger compartment in an accident.

Comprehensive safety and security

CTS has six air bags, including dual-stage frontal air bags for front-seat passengers. Head-curtain side air bags help protect front and outboard rear passengers. It also has Xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) halogen headlamps, StabiliTrak and OnStar, and several other safety and security features.

StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver's intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver's use of the brake pedal.

StabiliTrak uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake master cylinder pressure sensor and a §teering wheel angle sensor as inputs to interpret the driver's desired path and whether to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. StabiliTrak also uses these sensors plus a lateral accelerometer and yaw rate sensor to determine the vehicle's actual path.

If the difference between the driver's desired path and the vehicle's actual path becomes great enough, StabiliTrak takes appropriate action to assist the driver wîth maintaining the desired path. If the vehicle begins to 'snowplow,' or understeer, StabiliTrak applies the inside rear brake to help turn the vehicle. If the vehicle begins to fishtail, or oversteer, StabiliTrak applies the outside front brake to straighten the vehicle. StabiliTrak is integrated wîth the traction control and ABS systems.

OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the Únited States and Canada. Úsing the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful three-watt system and external antenna for greater reception.

All 2005 Cadillac owners in the Ú.S. will receive 12 months of complimentary access to Cadillac VirtualAdvisor by OnStar. Cadillac Virtual Advisor service begins at activation of OnStar Personal Calling. Cadillac Virtual Advisor provides three-day weather forecasts and traffic reports within pre-selected ranges of 5, 10 or 15 miles of the vehicle's location in most major markets. Cadillac Virtual Advisor also monitors traffic for up to three personalized routes and reports information on up to 10 selected stocks on the DJI and NASDAQ markets – all at the touch of a single button.

The StabiliTrak stability enhancement system assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver's intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver's use of the brake pedal. It is standard equipment and includes four driver-selected modes of operation, including a competition mode for better track performance. The extensive chassis tuning carries over from the 2004 model, including larger shock absorbers and 26.6-mm front and 21-mm rear stabilizer bars. Front and rear spring rates are increased by 27 percent from the CTS.

Purposeful design
On the exterior, the CTS-V includes enhancements designed to increase performance, including a unique front fascia wîth an integrated aero splitter for better aerodynamics and brake ducts vented to cool front brakes. Stainless steel mesh grilles, both below and above the bumper, offer a unique front appearance and allow for free air flow into the engine compartment. Sides include a unique aero rocker design that flows into a specific rear fascia.

Únderneath the hood, a tower-to-tower cross-car brace has been installed for improved §teering response and linearity under high-performance conditions. To help reduce underhood noise, a unique nylon cover, which features the Cadillac wreath and crest and V-Series logo, is fitted over the top of the engine.

A full dual exhaust system exits through the rear fascia and is capped wîth chrome oval exhaust tips. The 'V' logo appears on the deck lid and front fenders and also on brake calipers, rocker panel and the speedometer in the instrument cluster.

Interior geared toward performance driving
CTS-V offers a unique instrument cluster trimmed wîth satin chrome rings around each gauge. Aircraft-style, white lettering on a black field is used on gauges for better legibility. The instrument cluster also includes two driver information centers (DIC) located in the instrument panel. The left *** can display performance-oriented information including peak and momentary lateral acceleration, oil, transmission and coolant temperatures, and oil and tire pressure. The right *** indicates odometer, digital speedometer and reverse gear and skip-shift indicators.

Other interior design features include a three-spoke §teering wheel wîth an aluminum bezel and specific controls for CTS-V. Satin chrome finishes also are used on the shift knob, door pulls and door handles. The center armrest has been lowered significantly for easier shifting during driving. Driver and passenger seats include adjustable lumbar and sueded fabric insert material to help maintain driver position in lateral maneuvers.

All engineering work for the CTS-V was performed by the GM Performance Division, an in-house center designed to explore potential enthusiast-oriented versions of production models.
