PONTIAC ÚNVIELS NEW COMPACT SÚV
Torrent Combines Capability with Performance
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Pontiac today announced its plans to produce a new sport utility vehicle, the 2006 Pontiac Torrent, at the California International Auto Show in Anaheim. Scheduled for introduction in Fall 2005, the Torrent will cap off a banner year for Pontiac next year that includes the debut of the Grand Prix GXP, G6 coupe, Solstice roadster, and G6 convertible.
"The Torrent represents a new dimension of the Pontiac's commitment to 'total performance,'" said Jim Bunnell, Pontiac-GMC general manager. "Along with a spirited powertrain and a crisp handling package rarely seen in an compact SÚV, the Torrent adds a degree of flexibility and spaciousness designed to meet the needs of owners with active lifestyles."
Sporting a strong, athletic stance and Pontiac's new contemporary styling cues, the Torrent will be powered by a 185 horsepower, 3.4-liter V6 engine in either a front-wheel or all-wheel drive system. Paired with that powertrain is a specially tuned suspension system that allows for the utility and capability of an SÚV without sacrificing the precision handling characteristics normally associated with a performance car.
The first public showing of the Pontiac Torrent is scheduled for the Los Angeles Auto Show in January 2005. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
Pontiac is a division of General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) and markets the Bonneville, GTO, Grand Prix, Grand Am, Vibe, Sunfire, Aztek and Montana. Pontiac sold more than 475,000 vehicles in 2003, ranking third among GM divisions in total sales. In 2004, Pontiac will introduce the Montana SV6 crossover sport van and G6 sedan, followed in 2005 by the G6 coupe and convertible, the Grand Prix GXP and the Solstice roadster.
