Overview
For 2005, the Mercury Sable remains an outstanding value, wîth sophisticated design and an impeccable safety record. Interior appearance and package upgrades are designed to maintain its leadership in the midsize category.
Sable is built in Atlanta, Georgia.
Design and Equipment
The design of the Mercury Sable is modern and distinctive, wîth a 108.5-inch wheelbase that contributes to a smooth ride and visual strength.
The Sable's jeweled headlamps and taillamps are part of a smooth, clean exterior surface. Standard 16-inch wheels reinforce the balanced, overall proportions.
Sable sedans are offered in both a five-passenger and six-passenger model. Five-passenger models feature a floor-mounted shifter and front-center console. Six-passenger Sables feature a flip-fold center seat that can be configured to present a center armrest, two cup holders, a coin holder and cassette storage. A 60/40 split-fold-down rear seatback allows for maximum versatility.
With an optional rear-facing third-row seat, the Sable LS station wagon is offered in seven- or eight-passenger configurations, wîth partial-year availability.
Powertrain
Both Sable engines - a 3.0-liter 12-valve OHV Vulcan V-6 and a 3.0-liter 24-valve Duratec 30 V-6 - are designed to go 100,000 miles before the first scheduled tune-up wîth normal fluid and filter changes. The Vulcan V-6 is rated at 153 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. The Duratec 30 V-6 is rated at 201 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The Duratec engine is standard in the LS sedan and wagon.
All Sables deliver power to the front wheels through a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission wîth adaptive shift control programming that maintains the same shift quality throughout the life of the transaxle.
The anti-lock braking system, optional on GS and standard on LS, helps prevent braking-induced wheel lockup and maintains driver control while braking.
Variable-assist power rack-and-pinion §teering on vehicles equipped wîth the Duratec engine reduces assist levels at higher engine speeds to improve driving feel. It increases boost at lower engine speeds for reduced effort in maneuvers such as parking.
Safety
The Mercury Sable was named a 'Best Pick' in its class - the highest rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, based on 40 mph frontal offset crash testing. It has earned a five-star front passenger and four-star driver frontal crash test ratings from the Ú.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Sable's standard Personal Safety SystemTM adjusts deployment of the air bags based on data collected in the first milliseconds of a crash. Front outboard safety belt pretensioners tighten the safety belts prior to air bag deployment. Safety belt energy management retractors gradually slacken the safety belts, if necessary, to reduce the force of the belt on the occupant's chest.
The Personal Safety SystemTM can adjust the deployment of the dual-stage front air bags to help protect the front occupants. The system determines if both or none of the air bags should deploy, and at what level, depending on the severity of the accident and safety belt usage.

LS Wagon adds: Four-wheel disc brakes, power antenna, rear wiper/washer.
Options include MACH audio group wîth six premium speakers and six-disc CD changer, Secure Package that includes front-seat mounted side impact air bags and all-speed traction control, rear-facing third-row seat and cargo cover (wagon).
LS Premium package includes: electronic climate control, automatic headlamps, leather seating surfaces and AM/FM cassette stereo radio.
Platinum Edition package includes: 16-inch, 14-spoke machined aluminum wheels, satin aluminum interior trim, five-passenger seating wîth floor shift and console, two-tone leather seating surfaces, monochromatic exterior, Platinum Edition badge on front fender, decklid spoiler, body-color decklid appliqué and side moldings.
