2005 Infiniti G35 Sedan Offers Redesigned Styling, Refined Interior and More Horsepower

Infiniti's popular G35 sedan, which continues to set monthly and yearly sales records, raised the bar in class in 2004 with the addition of an advanced all-wheel drive model, the G35x AWD. For 2005, G35 takes another major leap forward with a redesigned exterior, a refined interior featuring a new instrument panel and console area and increased horsepower and torque for the standard 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine.

Automatic transmission equipped 2005 G35 models receive an additional 20 horsepower and 10 lb-ft of toque, while the G35 sedan with 6-speed manual transmission model adds 38 horsepower (torque remains at 260 lb-ft). Other performance-oriented changes for 2005 include the use of larger standard brake rotors and the addition of 18-inch wheels and tires and viscous limited-slip differential to the Sport-Tuned Suspension Package.

'For 2005, our engineers and designers chose to ignore the old adage of ‘if it isn't broken, don't fix it' and greatly enhanced the desirability and driveability of the G35 sedan,' said Mark Igo, vice president and general manager, Infiniti Division. 'When we introduced the G35 two-and-a-half years ago we intended it to be the leading sport sedan in its class. As the changes for 2005 demonstrate, we're serious about maintaining that position again this year.'

A Sporty, Dynamic New Exterior
The most visible changes to the G35 for 2005 can be seen in the vehicle's redesigned exterior, which features a new hood and trunk, new front and rear bumpers, body-colored side sills, revised headlight lens and new dual circle taillights. Also featured are new 7-spoke 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

The refreshed styling continues to express the G35's strong balance between sportiness and function. The low, aggressive hoodline, with restyled, lightweight aluminum hood, flows into the sharply angled windshield and contributes to the G35's sporty, powerful silhouette. The front fascia features a revised grille, new front bumper design and new headlight lens with integrated fog lights and turn signals.

A smooth visual line flows from the new front end and front fenders through the side profile, while the C-pillar and rear fenders accentuate the spaciousness of the cabin. The large greenhouse provides good visibility from all seating positions. The new rear fascia is highlighted by the redesigned rear combination lamps with LED taillights. The LED lights provide maintenance-free operation and bright visual recognition for following drivers during braking.

The 2005 G35 continues to utilize the racing technology-inspired FM (Front Mid-ship) platform, which mounts the engine behind the front axle in the 'front mid-ship' position. The positioning of the engine is a key to the G35's high level of driving performance, providing a nearly optimized 54:46 (55:45 G35x) percent front-to-rear-weight balance. This layout also features a long wheelbase (112.2 inches) and short front and rear overhangs, providing a large interior for its highly manageable overall length (186.5 inches) and excellent interior space utilization. A wide front and rear track adds to the G35's overall handling stability and further enhances interior and trunk volume.

The FM platform design also places a strong emphasis on aerodynamics. The G35 has a coefficient of drag measurement of just 0.27 (0.26 with optional rear spoiler) for reduced wind noise and optimized fuel economy. The design also emphasizes the control of airflow under the body. The extensive use of diffusers and deflectors helps the G35 achieve zero front lift (0.0 clf), reducing drag and noise and contributing to vehicle stability. With the optional rear spoiler, zero rear lift is also achieved.

The G35 is offered in eight exterior colors, including two new colors, Serengeti Sand and Lakeshore Slate. The other available colors include Ivory Pearl, Brilliant Silver, Black Obsidian, Garnet Fire, Diamond Graphite and Twilight Blue.

A Richer, More Authentic Interior Design
For 2005, the G35's interior offers a new, even higher quality look and feel, along with a redesigned instrument panel and console area. Materials and textures have been refined to provide a richer impression and the use of real aluminum and new wood-tone trim provides a degree of authenticity to the interior. Available wood accents (Wood Trim Package) have been revised from Bird's Eye maple to a straight-grained Rosewood and the application of wood trim in the interior has been expanded. A new Stone (gray) and Wheat (beige) interior colors join the previously available Graphite (black) to allow more choice for customers. Every 2005 G35 comes with standard leather-appointed seating.

'While still retaining the sporty character and solid ergonomics of the G35's interior, the refinements for 2005 clearly take the tactile elements of the design to the next level,' said Igo. 'It's a significant upgrade that owners are sure to appreciate.'

Examples of the G35's combination of sportiness and comfort can be found throughout the spacious (98.0 cubic feet) interior. The driver's seat uses a special center mound shape with high damping urethane foam and special spring design to support the driver during sporty driving, while the front passenger's seat has a flatter-shaped lower cushion and the seat is shaped to provide a relaxed posture. In the rear, the G35 offers a choice of wide bucket-shaped seats or optional rear reclining seats, both with ample knee room, and a pass-through armrest. The G35 trunk measures a full 14.8 cubic feet of trunk space.

A three-spoke steering wheel provides a firm grip and sporty feel and the instrument panel features Infiniti's Fine Vision electro-fluorescent illumination system and signature analog clock. The optional DVD-based Infiniti Navigation System includes a 7.0-inch retractable screen. Audio systems include a standard 6-speaker AM/FM with in-dash 6-disc CD changer with mp3 playback capability and an optional Bose® premium audio system with an AM/FM/ in-dash 6-disc CD changer with RDS, 7 speakers, speed-sensitive volume control and steering wheel audio controls.

Enhanced Performance and Choice of Rear-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive
Since its introduction, the G35 has been noted for its outstanding balance of acceleration and handling. The heart of G35's performance is its standard 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6, derived from the VQ engine series, which has been recognized as one of the 'Ten Best Engines' by Ward's Auto World magazine for ten consecutive years.

For 2005, several modifications have been made including a new electronic exhaust valve timing, improved cooling and air flow and strengthening of several components, resulting in an increase of horsepower and torque to 280 horsepower (from 260 hp) and 270 lb-ft of torque (from 260 lb-ft) for models equipped with the advanced 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with manual shift mode.

The 2005 G35 6MT model with close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission receives an additional horsepower increase, bringing it to 298 horsepower (torque remains at 260 lb-ft).

'Already one of the top performers in class and the recipient of numerous top rankings in enthusiast magazine head-to-head comparison tests, the 2005 G35's performance enhancements make a powerful statement about Infiniti's intention to not rest on our laurels,' said Igo.

The VQ engine design includes a long list of advanced systems, including a continuously variable valve timing control system, a 'noiseless' timing chain for quiet operation, a structurally reinforced aluminum engine block and an electronically controlled 'drive-by-wire' throttle system. It also features a modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, and molybdenum coated lightweight pistons.

Along with its advanced engine design, the G35 is also offered with a state-of-the-art 'intelligent' all-wheel drive system. Introduced in December 2003, the G35x AWD model features Infiniti's ATTESA E-TS™ (Advanced Total Traction Engineering System for All Electronic Torque Split) all-wheel drive system, which is also utilized on the Infiniti FX45 and FX35 AWD premium crossover SÚVs.

The system utilizes an active torque distribution management system with an active center differential designed for smooth starts, better fuel economy and better traction and maneuverability on snowy roads than conventional all-wheel drive systems and minimal compromise of rear-wheel drive performance characteristics on dry roads.

The system's advanced torque split control strategy automatically transfers optimum torque to the wheels according to road and driving conditions. It provides outstanding cornering capability similar to a sports car due to optimum torque distribution to the front and rear wheels (50:50 up to 0:100).

The system also provides high starting traction performance and smooth, stable acceleration, especially in snow-covered or off-road situations with the driver-selectable Snow-Mode switch, which allows the driver to fix the torque distribution ratio at 50:50 and reduces throttle sensitivity to improve performance at low speeds on slippery roads as desired.

'The ATTESA system provides the best of both worlds – the handling feel and quiet operation of a rear-wheel drive vehicle, with the sure-footed traction of all-wheel drive,' said Igo.

All 2005 G35s, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, come with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), enhancing vehicle stability under a variety of driving conditions.

The G35's advanced braking system utilizes power-assisted 4-wheel vented disc brakes with larger rotors for 2005. The system also includes 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), which distributes brake force depending on load condition (passengers and cargo) and Brake Assist (BA), which senses hard or panic pedal application and helps provide maximum braking capacity and Active Brake Limited Slip (ABLS), which uses the ABS sensors to detect wheel spin and applies braking to the spinning wheel.

The 2005 G35's high level of sporty handling is provided by a standard 4-wheel independent multi-link suspension design. The front suspension minimizes alignment changes through use of two separate lower links and a long upper link.

The rear design separates the shock absorbers and springs, locating the shock absorber inline with the wheel center to help reduce suspension friction and reduce the wind-up motion of the axle on acceleration.

Both front and rear suspension designs utilize aluminum components to reduce unsprung weight and incorporate 'ripple control' shock absorbers with damping control lips for suppressing high-frequency, micro-amplitude vibrations. As a result, tiny ripples in the road surface are absorbed to deliver a smooth, comfortable ride.

The 2005 G35 features standard 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with P215/55R17 tires on automatic transmission models and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and P235/45R18 tires on the 6-speed manual transmission model. The 18-inch wheels and tires and Viscous Limited-Slip Differential are optionally available on all models as part of the Sport-Tuned Suspension package. A Tire Pressure Monitor System is standard on all 2005 G35 models.

A Long List of Standard Safety Features
Every 2005 G35 comes with standard dual-stage supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors and RF occupant classification sensor, front-seat side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted side-impact curtain air bags for front- and rear-seat occupant head protection. Also standard are 3-point ALR/ELR seat belts (driver's side ELR only) and front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and adjustable upper anchors. It is also equipped with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system.

The G35 also features Zone Body Construction with front and rear crushable zones to help disperse crash energy around the passenger compartment.

The FM platform provides a number of innovative safety performance features, including a mechanism for releasing the engine downward in certain collisions, and a breakaway driveshaft helping prevent the intrusion of the engine into the passenger compartment and brake pedal construction that helps prevent rearward pedal movement and lower leg injuries.

G35 Availability and Equipment
The 2005 Infiniti G35 is available in three models – G35, G35x AWD and G35 6MT. The G35 and G35x AWD come with standard 5-speed automatic transmission and manual shift mode with downshift rev matching and 17-inch wheels and tires. The G35 6MT model features a close-ratio 6-speed manual, 18-inch wheels and tires, Viscous Limited-Slip Differential, sport-tuned suspension and higher horsepower engine tuning. All 2005 G35 models include leather-appointed interiors and a long list of standard comfort and convenience features.

Several available optional packages allow the buyer to custom-equip the 2005 G35 to further reflect his or her exact driving style and tastes. 2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe Adds Revised Interior and New 298-Horsepower G35 Coupe 6MT Model

The Infiniti G35 coupe, since its introduction in 2003, has offered sports coupe lovers a powerful, rear-wheel drive performer – one that combines a racing-inspired platform and advanced technology, all draped under a sensuous, aerodynamic body. Now, for the 2005 model year, Infiniti turns up the heat on the competition with enhanced performance, a revised interior and new equipment offerings.

Leading the changes for 2005 is the more powerful G35 Coupe 6MT model with a 298-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC V6, an increase of 18 horsepower over the G35 Coupe model's standard 280-horsepower rating. A new Sport-Tuned Suspension Package with 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels, sport-tuned suspension, Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VLSD), drilled aluminum pedals and unique sport steering wheel is offered with the 5-speed automatic transmission equipped G35 Coupe model. The Sport-Tuned Suspension Package equipment is included as standard equipment on the G35 Coupe 6MT.

'The long list of enhancements to G35 coupe lineup for 2005 make an exciting vehicle even more thrilling,' said Mark Igo, vice president and general manager, Infiniti Division. 'Serious driving enthusiasts will enjoy the Sport-Tuned Suspension Package's larger wheels and tires, while the unmatched combination of the G35 Coupe 6MT's close-ratio manual transmission and 298 horsepower raises the bar to an even higher level of sporty performance.'

In addition to the available performance enhancements, all 2005 G35 coupes receive a number of new interior features, including a redesigned instrument panel and console area with aluminum trim or optional Rosewood trim (late availability) and added mp3 playback capability. Two new interior colors, Stone and Wheat, and three new exterior colors, Serengeti Sand, Lakeshore Slate and Athens Blue, offer additional choices for customers.

An Emphasis on Performance
The 2005 G35 coupe is aimed at the true car enthusiast. Its advanced 5-speed automatic transmission features a manual mode function with new downshift rev-matching, which revs the engine with each downshift to provide better response for the driver. The close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission offers an improved shifter for better feel during shifting. Infiniti's Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is standard on every G35 coupe.

The G35 Coupe 6MT model receives an additional 18-plus horsepower and a red line increase to 7,000 rpm compared to the automatic transmission-equipped G35 coupes' standard 280 horsepower and 6,600 rev limit, bringing its power to 298-horsepower. The extra power comes from the addition of electronic exhaust valve timing and numerous structural improvements to the engine block. Torque is rated at 270 lb-ft for the G35 Coupe and 260 lb-ft for the G35 Coupe 6MT.

The foundation for all models is the G35's standard 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine. The advanced engine design, part of the award-winning VQ engine series, includes a long list of advanced systems, including a continuously variable valve timing control system, a 'noiseless' timing chain for silent operation, a structurally reinforced aluminum engine block and an electronically controlled 'drive-by-wire' throttle system. It also features a modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, and molybdenum coated lightweight pistons.

For 2005, the G35 coupe is again offered with a standard, advanced 4-wheel multi-link suspension design with extensive use of aluminum-alloy components to reduce unsprung weight and incorporate special 'ripple control' shock absorber technology for responsive yet comfortable ride and handling.

The front suspension design minimizes alignment changes through use of two separate lower links and a long upper link. The rear design separates the shock absorbers and springs, locating the shock absorber inline with the wheel center to help reduce suspension friction and reduce the wind-up motion of the axle on acceleration.

The suspension tuning of the Sport-Tuned Suspension Package (standard on the G35 Coupe 6MT) is more aggressive than the G35 Coupe model, with stiffer spring and shocks and larger diameter stabilizer bars.

The 2005 G35 coupe also benefits from its use of the innovative FM (for Front Mid-ship) platform, which positions the engine behind the front axle. This results in a nearly optimized front-to-rear weight balance of 54:46, which factors in weight transfer during key handling maneuvers, such as entering and exiting corners. The FM platform also positions its large diameter wheels and tires out near the corners of the vehicle, providing an extra measure of handling stability.

The G35 Coupe is equipped with standard 6-spoke, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels and P225/50VR17 tires up front with P235/50VR17 tires in the rear. Also offered are 7-spoke, 18-inch titanium-finish wheels and high-performance tires.

The G35 Coupe 6MT and Sport-Tuned Suspension Package equipped models offer 5-spoke, 19-inch polished aluminum-alloy wheels with P225/40WR19 tires in front and P245/40WR19 tires in the rear. The Sport-Tuned Suspension Package also adds a standard Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VSLD) (also available in the Performance Tire and Wheel Package). All G35 coupes feature a standard Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).

Standard braking system components include 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes with larger rotors for 2005, along with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).

Sporty Exterior, Refined Interior
The exterior of the 2005 G35 coupe offers styling that is both sporty and elegant. It features standard xenon headlights, integrated fog lights, LED tail lamps, and body-color, dual power, heated, remote-controlled outside mirrors. An Aero Package is available, with rear spoiler and rear side air diffusers. Also offered on all models is a dual sliding glass sunroof with one-touch open/close operation.

The G35 coupe shares the G35 sedan's long 112.2-inch wheelbase but is several inches shorter in overall length (182.2 inches versus 186.9) and height (54.8 inches versus 57.7). With its performance-oriented chassis, wider wheel openings and fenders, the G35 coupe is also slightly wider than the sedan (71.5 inches versus 69.0).

Three new exterior colors are offered for 2005 – Serengeti Sand, Lakeshore Slate and Athens Blue, in addition to carryover colors Laser Red, Black Obsidian, Brilliant Silver, Diamond Graphite and Ivory Pearl.

'The G35 coupe is pure Infiniti in terms of its clean, progressive styling,' said Igo. 'We also believe it's one of the best looking vehicles on the road, matching its performance leadership with equally strong visual appeal.'

The G35 coupe's 4-passenger interior is equally attractive, combining a driver-oriented cockpit with an Infiniti level of luxury and design detail.

For 2005, the instrument panel and console area have been redesigned and materials and textures have been upgraded to provide an even higher quality look and feel. The use of real aluminum on the center console and dashboard areas provides an added degree of authenticity and new optional Rosewood trim (late availability) adds a warmer feel for those who desire it.

Two new interior colors, Stone (gray) and Wheat (beige) are offered in 2005, along with Graphite (black).

Also for 2005, leather-appointed seats (with heated front seats) are now standard. The sport-contoured front bucket seats are 8-way power adjustable for the driver and 4-way power adjustable for the passenger. A power walk-in feature allows access to the rear seats. The rear seatback folds down for added cargo flexibility.

An in-dash 6-disc CD changer, with mp3 capability added for 2005, is standard, while a digital Bose® premium audio system with eight speakers and a DVD-based Infiniti Navigation System with 7.0-inch wide power retractable monitor are optional.

Other interior amenities include an Infiniti signature analog clock, Fine Vision electro-fluorescent gauge illumination and driver and passenger one-touch up/down power windows and door locks, tilt and telescoping steering, to name just a few.
The Sport-Tuned Suspension Package adds drilled aluminum pedals and perforated leather-appointed seats with unique steering wheel stitching.

High-Level of Safety
From a safety standpoint, every 2005 G35 coupe comes with standard dual-stage front supplemental air bags with seat belt sensors and RF occupant classification sensor, front-seat side-impact supplemental air bags and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags. Also standard are 3-point ALR/ELR seat belts (driver's side ELR only) and front seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters and adjustable upper anchors, and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system.

The G35 coupe's FM platform Zone Body construction is designed to help protect occupants in a collision by efficiently absorbing crash energy through use of front and rear crushable zones. In a high-speed frontal collision, for example, the crushable zone crumples while the engine is designed to move under the occupant compartment. This has the effect of expanding the crushable zone, thereby helping to reduce the deceleration g-force and simultaneously helping to minimize cabin deformation, especially in the leg area.

In offset impacts, a strong body construction is needed to decrease the amount of cabin deformation. Other features also contribute to improved occupant safety, including the breakaway construction of the propeller shaft (connected with the engine-drop function) and the double-wall construction of the bulkhead.

Models and Packages
The 2005 Infiniti G35 coupe is offered in two fully equipped models, the G35 Coupe and G35 Coupe 6MT.

A number of optional packages are offered, including the previously detailed Sport-Tuned Suspension Package. The Premium Package includes sunroof, Bose audio system, power tilt and telescopic steering, dual HVAC controls, auto on/off headlights, HomeLink Úniversal Transceiver, and automatic anti-glare rearview mirror.

Other packages include the Performance Tire & Wheel Package (G35 Coupe model only) with 18-inch wheels and tires; and the Aero Package with rear spoiler and side diffusers. Individually available options include the sunroof, Infiniti Navigation System (available with Premium Package), and genuine Rosewood trim (available with the Premium Package beginning with February 2005 production).

'The G35 coupe has always had an undeniable visual appeal with outstanding performance. With the drivetrain enhancements and the interior improvements for 2005, the G35 coupe is definitely a candidate for any enthusiasts' dream garage,' said Igo.
