The Trident Clipper

Trident used a design that had originated with the efforts of another small English specialty sports car maker, TVR of Blackpool. Only three of the TVR Tridents were built. Subsequent Tridents were built by Trident Cars, Ltd, of Woodbridge, Suffolk. In Peter Fillby's book on TVR, he dedicates a chapter to 'The one that got away.'

Tridents were original offered in two series: the Clipper which used essentially the same running gear as the AC Cobra, and the Venturer which used a British Ford three-liter V-6. Both cars used similar, but distinctly different body shells based on the design by Fiore working with Fissore of Turin, Italy who have also been credited with design on Montroverdi cars and the beautiful Elva-BMW prototypes. The idea to compete with the Italian supercars Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini of the period was very timely, although not well funded The entire production run of various Trident models was approximately 125 cars with the first Bill Last prototype appearing in the January 1967 Racing Car Show at Earls Court, London. This Trident is distinguished by the one piece nose section that opens in entirety for easy access and exclusive to the first 4 cars. It has been noted that 29 V-8 Clippers were built with only 10 being of this specification. The Ford factory provided the High-Performance drivetrains directly to the manufacturer.

Clippres also boasted quite luxurious and well appointed interiors making the entire package a very attractive combination for the sportier driver who also liked his comfort while covering the grounds rapidly.

This Car
Discovered in Texas, totally original in condition, and the recipient of a quite recent, faithful to original specifications, $70,000 restoration from Skip McCabe of Illinois in preparation for National level Concours, this car has covered a lifetime total of 6,800 miles on the motor original to the chassis, has had only three owners from new, and should be considered one of, it no the best Trident in the world. It sports the desirable Ferrari Rosso Chiaro exterior finish and black Connally leather interior.

With Anglo-American running gear and a light-weight Italian body, the sensational performance offered by this prototype Clipper is best described as jaw-dropping in its a celebration and straight line speed combined with precise roadholding and braking.

It has been featured on the cover of the subject of a centerfold story in Volume 39, No. 1 of Autmobile Quarterly and was exhibited at the 1996 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as well as the Meadow Brooke Concours in Michigan.

This singular automobile is a rare opportunity to own something that is virtually unique even among the class of cars known as V-8 powered coachbuilt specials.
