1974 Porsche Carrera IROC RSR news, pictures, and information

Coupe

In October 1973, twelve of the top drivers in the world were invited to compete in IROC, the International Race of Champions. A series of four races in which all variables (cars, modification and fine tuning) have been equalized so what remains is the courage and skill of 12 great champions representing racing four major branches; Formula One, USAC, NASCAR, and SCCA.

The car selected by race organizers Roger Penske, Les Richter and Mike Phelps was the 1974 Porsche Carrera RSR 3-liter racecar. Fifteen identical Porsche Carrera RSR 3-liter race cars were ordered from the Porsche Factory in Germany. There, IROC personnel identically prepped the cars for shipment to California where all maintenance and final tuning was done by IROC Porsche mechanics.

Bobby Allison drove this Gulf Blue IROC RSR in the first and third race at Riverside California. At that time Bobby Allison was NASCAR's top record holder of Riverside's Grand National with 41 wins since 1961. In 1972, Bobby was voted 'America's Best Driver of the Year' and also selected stock car racing's most popular driver. The latter award carries a special significance due to the fact that only competitive drivers bestow it. Then in 1973, Bobby Allison was named the Martini and Rossi Driver of the year.
