1972 Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato 1600 news, pictures, and information

Designer: Zagato

This 1972 Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato 1600 is one of 402 produced with the 1.6-liter (1,570 cc) twin overhead cam, all-alloy, four-cylinder, hemi head engine fed by twin side-draft Weber carburetors coupled to a five-speed transmission. 1,108 were produced with the 1.3-liter engine. The 1.6 liter engine produces 109 horsepower and is capable of a top speed of 118 mph. It weighs 2,095 pounds and sold for $4,505 in 1972.

Unlike most Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeos, Junior Zagatos were produced with steel bodies rather than aluminum. The car is equipped with an aluminum hood, power windows and a custom interior. The Junior Z was not imported to the United States. This car is believed to have been originally sold in France and was later imported to Holland where it was restored in the late 1990s. In the fall of 1998, the present owner imported the vehicle to the United States.

The Junior Zagato was based on Alfa Romeo's popular Giulia model, even sharing the same floor plan as the Giulia Spider. It debuted at the Turin Motor Show in November of 1969. Zagato's design was clean and fresh, with an emphasis on good visibility. The advanced 'wedge-shaped' styling foreshadowed many later 1970's models, and was even virtually copied by Honda for its CRX in the early 1990s. Unlike most Zagato-bodied Alfa Romeos, the Juniors were steel rather than aluminum, and came in both a long and short tailed version.

There were only a handful of Junior Z examples built and this example is one of the few that were sent to the United States. It is an Italian delivery car, which was imported to California in 2005 from the previous Dutch owner. It has been maintained to highly original, unmodified speciation, with its Blue Zagato color, original beige Zagato interior and correct, unmodified engine.

The car remains as one of Ecole Spada's hallmark designs on a lovely Alfa platform.
