1947 Delahaye Type 175 S

Like many other automakers, Delahaye resumed post-War production using mildly updated versions of its pre-War products. Production of the Type 135 was joined by the Type 175, introduced in the fall of 1948 at the Paris Show. In a war-torn Europe, with many factories destroyed, people displaced, and material shortages, Delahaye was able to develop a new chassis and engine.

The 175 used a semi-monocoque design concept with a stressed steel floor-pan, with parallel outer rails, and was the company's first to be offered in left-hand drive. It used a new independent suspension system with a Dubonnet-type front setup with a DeDion rear axle with drive shafts that ran through the sides of the frame. The rear semi-elliptical leaf springs were conventional, with the prior friction-type shocks replaced by lever-arm hydraulic shock absorbers.

The six-cylinder engine displaced just under 4.5 liters and used a single side-mounted camshaft to operate the overhead valves by push-rods. Single or triple Solex carburetor versions were offered and, depending on the setup and compression ratio, produced between 125 and 165 horsepower. The engine was similar to the preceding Type 135, but much larger and equipped with numerous improvements that made it stronger, improved breathing, and likely no heavier. While the Type 135 used four main bearings, the Type 175 had seven. The Type 135 had nine total intake and exhaust ports, while the Type 175 used six intake and six exhaust ports, for a total of twelve. Weight was similar to the preceding engine due to the use of a cast aluminum (instead of cast iron) block and a cast-iron cylinder head.

The Type 175S versions were equipped with three downdraught Solex AIP carburetors, increased compression ratio, and chrome, center-locked Rudge wire-lacked wheels on splined hubs.

Engines were backed by Cotal-supplied electromechanical transmission, operated by a small lever positioned behind the steering wheel. Stopping power was from finned alloy drums operated by hydraulics instead of cables. Philippe Charbonneaux designed the new grille and the company required coachbuilders to use the new grille design as they worked to establish an identity 'face' in the postwar era.

The Delahaye was joined by the Type 178 and 180, also powered by 4.5 liters but resting on longer wheelbases. The 175 used the shorter platform and was the most popular with approximately 51 examples built. In hopes of entering the lucrative United States market, ten examples were built with a left-hand drive configuration.

Delahaye was taken over by Hotchkiss in 1954, who dropped both the Delahaye name and automobile production.
