In 1964, Lotus introduced their new 1-liter Formula 3 race car, the Lotus 31. Fitted with a 997cc Ford Cosworth 109E and breathing for a single choke Weber or SU carburetor, the engine produced 97 horsepower. It had a multi-tubular spaceframe and a design similar to the Lotus 22 Formula Junior car.
It is believed that between 1964 and 1965, only 12 examples were produced. A further 19 cars were produced in 1966. A few of the examples were used by Motor Racing Stables at Brands Hatch to train students in the art of racing.
The Type 31 Lotus cars were fast and nimble, but not too competitive against the more advanced monocque cars of 1964.

And for more than a couple of years there would be one tea...[Read more...] |

![]() | At a time when Maserati's financial picture couldn't have looked more bleak, it would be enticed to build what many would end up considering to be one of their finest sportscars ever. It would even be suggested it could have been one of the greatest of all time if Maserati had had the money to develop it. Unfortunately, the Maserati Tipo 151 forever lives in relative obscurity when it truly deserves to be remembered as much more. | 1961 Targa Florio: Porsche Dominance, Ferrari Victorious | |
![]() | The first race held on the island of Sicily that included an automobile would take place between the car, a bicycle and a horse. Although the gentleman on the bicycle would drop out rather early due to leg cramps constantly going up and down on the mountainous roads, the battle between the de Dion motor tricycle and the horse would be an intriguing one. In the end, the same principles that played out in that first race would come into play many years later when the island hosted the 1961 Targa F...[Read more...] |
