1959 Chrysler 300E

The Chrysler 300 'letter series' began in 1955 with the C-300, with the '300' representing the standard 300-horsepower V8 engine. These were known as the 'Letter Series' as the letter increased each year, with 1956 being the 300B, 1957 being the 300C, etc., and concluding in 1965 with the 300L. They gained a reputation for luxury and performance, and were dubbed the 'Bankers Hot Rods.'

Two years after the introduction of the Chrysler 300, they were given a dramatic restyling that continued to use the Virgil Exner 'Forward Look' style.

Hemi engines had powered the letter cars since the beginning, but in 1959, they were replaced with the new Golden Lion Wedge-head 413 cubic-inch V8 engine that was factory-rated at 380 horsepower and 450 ft-lb of torque with two Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors. Power output remained very similar to the Hemi and was backed by PowerFlite Automatic transmission.

Minor styling updates were applied, including a revised grille that continued the familiar design scheme introduced in 1957 but with the removal of the vertical bar. On the driver's side of the hood was the 300 insignia, in line with the headlamps. Refinements continued throughout the year, including the red grille accents and air scoops, an 'engine turned' instrument panel appliqué, and an interior appointed in natural tan 'living leather.' Power swivel seats were now standard.

Body styles on the 300E included a 2-door, six-passenger hardtop with a factory list price of $5,320. The convertible sold for $5,750 and a mere 140 examples were built. Just 550 of the hardtop were sold, and both sales figures were a slight decrease from the previous year.

1959 would be the final year for a separate body and frame construction. The 1960 Chrysler 300F, the sixth edition of the letter series, introduced all-new styling and unibody construction.
