1979 Chrysler Cordoba

Introduced in 1975 as 'the new small Chrysler,' the Cordoba wasn't actually what would be considered a 'small' car by today's standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com) Measuring 2.5 inches longer than a 1924 Chrysler Six, the two-door was a sales success, partly based on a memorable series of TV ads featuring actor Ricardo Montalban.

The Cordoba exterior received a mild facelift in 1976. The interior styling was designed for a high level of comfort, with a simulated rosewood instrument panel, shag carpeting, 'cashmere-like' bench seating and Corinthian leather buckets.

The 1979 Chrysler Cordoba was a 2-door hardtop coupe available in base or '300' trim levels, with V8 engines being the only option. The base Cordoba sold for $5,995, nearly the same as a LeBaron Medallion Sedan or LeBaron Town & Country Station Wagon. Only the Newport and New Yorker had a higher base price in the Chrysler lineup.

The Cordoba was a personal-luxury coupe with vertically stacked rectangular headlamps combined with parking, turn signal, and side marker lights mounted at the corners of the front end panel. The name 'Chrysler' was recessed into the grille header. The front grille was redesigned for 1979, now in a vertically-textured pattern with thing vertical strips surrounded by a thicker frame.

The 'Cordoba' nameplates and medallions were placed on the front-end fenders. The Chrysler and Cordoba name was also found on the decklid. The hood had a stand-up ornament. In the back were large taillamps that housed the distinctive crest. There was plenty of brightwork throughout the vehicle, including full wheel opening moldings and wide lower sill moldings, around the opera windows and lamps, and along with fender and quarter extensions.

Chrysler offered seven new body colors for 1979, including Dove Gray, Chianti Red, Nightwatch Blue, Spinnaker White, Formal Black, metallic Frost Blue, Light Cashmere, Teal Frost, Teal Green Sunfire, Sable Tan Sunfire, and Regent Red Sunfire. Also, three new trim colors became available, including Teal Green, Cashmere, and Midnight Blue. New two-tone paint treatments could be ordered with Crown and Landau vinyl roofs.

Just 693 examples of the Cordoba were ordered with the Crown roof.

New features included a High-Lower heater/defroster, a folding center armrest added to the split-back back seat, and the instrument panel trimmed in woodtone. A semi-automatic temperature-control air conditioning system was added to the list of available options, along with two new aluminum wheel styles, and a Roadability package which included rear sway bars and 15x7 inch wheels. A new Special Appearance package, which set the buyer back an additional $527, consisted of accent stripes, two-tone paint, square-cornered opera windows, black nerf stripes, dual remote sport mirrors, leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, and Aramid-belted radial tires with gold and white sidewalls.

The Cordoba 300 package (RPO Code A74) was offered later in the year. When selected, it added bucket seats, a blacked-out crossbar grille with a medallion, a 360 CID V8 engine with 195 horsepower, and special trim. The only available body color was Spinnaker white along with red/white/blue bodyside and decklid striping. They also had white sport remote mirrors, front fender louvers, white bumper guards and rub stripes, and '300' quarter-window decals. The interiors featured red leather bucket seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a tachometer, and an engine-turned dash appliqué. The suspension was upgraded with a special handling package, plus aluminum wheels with a '300' medallion in each hub, and GR60 x 15 OWL Aramid-belted radial tires.

The Chrysler Cordoba proved rather popular, with 73,195 examples built between the base and '300' trim levels. That figure includes the 3,811 examples fitted with the '300' option package.
