1960 Chevrolet Impala Series news, pictures, specifications, and information

Series 1700 Convertible
Chassis Num: 01867A155463
Engine Num: TO322F

The Chevrolet Impala, introduced in 1958, was the new entry in the mid-priced field and it encompassed style, performance, and handling. It was initially available in the Bel Air series with special trim, wheels, a deluxe interior, a unique triple tail-lamp arrangement before it became its own nameplate.

This example has been driven only 16,100 miles since new and it has never been restored. It is an original example that has been lovingly preserved over the years. It has its original red-and-white check interior that has never been replaced. Located under the seat is the original tissue box. It does ride on new correct-type tires, has a new exhaust system, and a new soft top.

This car has had only three owners since new. It earned an AACA 1st Junior Award at Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1994. In 2008, this original example, fitted with a 384 cubic-inch OHV V8 engine and a three-speed manual transmission was brought to the Gooding & Company auction held in Pebble Beach. It was estimated to sell for $100,000-$130,000. Bidding failed to satisfy the vehicle's reserve and the lot was left unsold.

Series 1700 Nomad Station Wagon
Chassis Num: 01835L167271

Sold for $28,600 at 2009 Worldwide Auctioneers.
For 1960, The Impala was Chevrolet's top-of-the-line model and was no longer just a trim level, but a complete line-up of cars including sedans, hard tops, 'flat tops', convertibles, and station wagons. One of the more expensive bodystyles in the Impala line-up was the six- and nine-passenger Nomad station wagon.

Chevrolet expanded its list of available options for 1960 in an effort to become the leader in its class. The plan worked and Chevrolet took over the industry lead and outsold its Ford and Dodge/Plymouth rivals.

This 1960 Chevrolet Impala Nomad Six-Passenger Wagon has only 21,000 miles on the odometer. It was originally delivered in Phoenix, Arizona and has had only three owners since new. The car has been given a fresh paint in Ermine White and all of the glass is completely original. The engine has been replaced with a modern 350 cubic-inch Chevrolet motor with a modern 700R4 transmission with overdrive.

At the 2009 Houston Classic Auction in Seabrook, Texas, presented by Worldwide Auctioneers, this Impala Nomad Wagon was estimated to sell for $35,000 - $45,000 and offered without reserve. The lot was sold for the sum of $26,000, plus buyer's premium.

Series 1700 Convertible

In 1960, the Chevrolet Impala was America's favorite car. The graceful Impala seemed born to cruise the new Interstates, with its 'Jet-Smooth Ride,' 'Full-Coil' suspension, a choice of 'Turbo-Fire' or 'Turbo-Thrust' V8 engines, and optional 'Powerglide' or 'Turboglide' automatic transmissions. Impala styling was out of this world, too. Horizontal gullwing fins arched gracefully above a sextet of tail lamps. Completing the image was a stylized 'jet-with-vapor trail' streaming across each quarter panel. The dual-cove dashboard added a measure of Corvette-like spirit to the Impala interior.

This Ermine White Impala convertible has been in the same family since 1960. It was originally a GM executive car driven by a neighbor who was a Chevrolet zone manager. A restoration was completed in the early 1980s. More recently, it was used by the Danbury Mint to help create a 1:24-scale die-cast model of the 1960 Impala.
