The Volvo S60 is ideally positioned between the larger S80 and smaller S40. It is Volvo's sportiest, most dynamic sedan. With high-performance variants such as the T5 and S60 R it is an image leader, demonstrating that Volvo's are not just 'for life' but also for the lively. It opens the idea of Volvo ownership to a younger and active group of buyers who likely otherwise would not have considered a Volvo.
Volvo has been a pioneer and leader in the turbocharging of family cars for more than a quarter of a century. For 2006, all S60 models are turbocharged. The normally aspirated S60 2.4 has been discontinued. Four versions of the versatile S60 sport sedan are offered for 2006: the S60 2.5T, S60 2.5T AWD, S60 T5 and the 300-horsepower S60 R (see separate S60 R Model Overview).
New All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction™ is standard on the S60 2.5T AWD. It mates with the S60 2.5T's 2.5-liter turbocharged engine for positive, instantaneous torque and optimum launch performance. The improved, computer controlled Haldex all-wheel-drive system instantly delivers up to 50 percent more torque to the rear axle only when needed, such as during takeoff.
Prior to Instant Traction, if the AWD system sensed that the front drive wheels were losing traction – such as on a slippery road – one-seventh of a wheel rotation occurred before it began redirecting torque to the wheels that have traction. This fraction of a rotation could influence performance under certain conditions. Instant Traction adds a one-way pre-charging valve to the AWD system that maintains an instantly available torque load of 59 foot-pounds. Torque can be transferred directly, without any speed difference. As before, there is no need for the driver to worry about engaging the system. It's all done automatically and seamlessly.
Other changes for 2006 comprise the realignment of option packages and stand-alone options. For example, the Convenience Package adds rear park assist, laminated side windows and a sunglass holder. The Touring Package has been deleted on the S60 2.5T AWD. Volvo's acclaimed Four-C Chassis system and a Sport Body Package with color coordinated front and rear spoilers and lower body side sills are now exclusive stand-alone options for the S60 T5.
In the Volvo tradition, the S60 benefits from a comprehensive array of safety features. Included are the standard Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain (IC), Whiplash Protection Seating System (WHIPS), seat belts with pyrotechnic pretensioners in all seating positions, dual-stage front airbags (SRS), Volvo's safety cage construction and the ISO-FIX attachment for rearward-facing child safety seats.
Upgraded last year, the S60's cockpit optimized the driving experience with a new center tunnel that included a versatile storage bin and a flexible cup holder design. The second generation of Volvo's legendarily comfortable seats created around orthopedic principles and a constellation of driver-centric creature comforts were also introduced.Source - Volvo Cars Media
