1973 Porsche 911E

Porsche built a reputation for their small-displacement rear-engine sports and racing cars which became known as 'giant killers,' capable of outperforming cars with much higher horsepower figures. In contrast, the Porsche relied on lightweight construction and superior handling, resulting in unique driving characteristics that helped solidify a dedicated and enthusiastic following.

Beginning in 1964 with the original 911, it quickly became an icon of performance that continuously evolved into a more sophisticated, powerful, and capable driving machine.

The single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat-six displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp. Progressive improvements would eventually lead to over 3-liter displacement sizes and, in turbocharged form, would develop well over 300 horsepower.

The 911S was introduced in 1966 and was distinguished by its Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels and its heavily revised engine developing 160 horsepower.

The first major change of the iconic Porsche 911 occurred in 1969 with the majority of the changes being internal. The rear track and wheelbase grew, while the overall length remained the same as the earlier cars. A new mechanical fuel injection system was introduced in the top-of-the-line 911S and the new 911E.

For 1970 the engine received the first of many enlargements - to 2.2 liters. The power produced by the 911 S increased to 180 bhp, further growing for 1972 with the introduction of the 2.4-liter engine.

The Porsche 911 E was conceived to fit in between the 911 T and the 911 S. The E represented 'einspritzung', or injection in German, signifying the presence of its mechanical fuel injection, which was developed jointly by Porsche and Bosch. Along with the fuel injection system, the 911E was also lavishly appointed with a variety of factory options. Replacing the 911L 'Luxus,' the 911E came with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, velour carpeting, vented brake discs, and golden script on the rear deck.

They were produced in both coupe and Targa body styles. For 1973, Porsche produced 2,421 examples.

In ascending order of both price and performance were the T, E, and S. The enlarged 2,341cc flat 6-cylinder unit gained some of the power it lost from compression reductions necessary to comply with stricter U.S. emissions requirements. The all-new Type 915 five-speed transaxle had a new design with a more user-friendly H-gate pattern for the first four gears.

Continuing its reputation, the 911E offered responsive steering, superb brakes, flexibility, durability, reliability, and performance.
