The Porsche 944S edition arrived in 1987, bringing with it a dual-cam, 16-valve version of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The engine had a displacement size of 151 cubic inches and offered nearly 190 (SAE) horsepower. The base engine in the 944 offered 147 (SAE) horsepower. This was an increase in power by 11, thanks to a free-flowing exhaust system. For those seeking even more, a turbocharged version was available bringing horsepower to nearly 220 (SAE) horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission was standard with an optional three-speed automatic. Disc brakes were located in both the front and rear. Pricing began at $25,500 and rose to over $33,000 for the turbocharged version. Anti-lock brakes were now optional. The Turbo trim levels received driver and passenger airbags and were optional on other trim levels.
