1994 Porsche 968

The Porsche 924, introduced in 1976 and produced until 1988, began an experimentation by Porsche in four-cylinder, front-engine cars. The final evolution was the Porsche 968, produced between 1992 to 1995. The 968 took over as the company's entry-level model from the 944, with which it shared about 20 percent of its parts - thus, Porsche claimed that 80% of the car was new.

The chassis of the 968 was mostly carried over from the 944 S2, which in itself shared many components with the 944 Turbo (internally numbered 951). The list includes the Brembo-sourced four-piston brake calipers on all four wheels, aluminum front A-arms and aluminum semi-trailing arms, used in a MacPherson strut arrangement. Additionally, the steel unibody structure was also very similar to that of previous models.

Powering the 968 was a three-liter version of the 944 engine further refined through the use of VarioCam variable valve timing, a dual-mass flywheel, and upgraded engine management. It displaced 3.0-liters with a 104mm bore and a 88mm stroke with an output rated at 237 bhp. Powertrain changes included the addition of Porsche's then-new VarioCam variable valve timing system, a dual-mass flywheel, an updated engine management electronics, and newly optimized induction and exhaust systems, along with other more minor revisions. The engine powering the 968 was the fourth-largest four-cylinder ever offered in a production car up to that time. Sending power to the rear wheels was handled by a new six-speed manual transmission which replaced the 944's old 5-speed, and Porsche's dual-mode Tiptronic automatic became an available option. The Tiptronic transmission and the VarioCam timing system were both recent developments for Porsche, with the Tiptronic system being introduced for the first time only three years prior to the debut of the 968, on the 1989 Type 964 911. The VarioCam timing system was first introduced on the 968 and would later become a feature of the Type 993 air-cooled six-cylinder engine.

The Porsche 968 styling was an evolution on that of the outgoing 944, itself based on the earlier 924. Elements were borrowed from its upscale sibling as Porsche attempted to create a 'family resemblance' between models and associate it with the luxury 928 Gran Turismo. The pop-up headlamps of the preceding models were changed to the ovid form seen on the 911. Bodystyles included both a coupe and a cabriolet. High-performance variants soon followed including the Clubsport, Turbo S, Turbo RS and Turbo RS LeMans.

Detail upgrades from the 944 included the Fuba roof-mounted antenna, 'Cup' style 16′ alloy wheels, a wider selection of interior and exterior colors, updated single-lens tail lamps, and a slightly updated 'B' pillar and rear quarter window to accommodate adhesive installation to replace the older rubber gasket installation.
